Over the past two weeks I have been doing a full STI swap. Today I finally got it on the ground and driving but need a few issues resolved and haven't been able to find much info on them.

Model: 2002 WRX with 2005 STI swap (including entire drivetrain, interior, wire, ect)

Mods: Grimmspeed BCS, catted TBE, AEM intake

    What's wrong:

1.) Will not rev past 3000 RPM - even when in motion it boggs down right at 3000 RPM (stuck in valet mode?). No boost.

2.) Very rough idle when MAF sensor is plugged in, runs smoothly without it plugged in

3.) CEL for "Throttle Position Sensor low input"

4.) DCCD controls do not work (checked all plugs)

5.) Rear defroster cycles on and off constantly

6.) Wiper motor randomly turns on and off

7.) Cruise control dummy light is always on

Maybe these are all separate issues, but maybe they are somehow related. Some ideas I've come across are the possibility of the immobilizer or some sensor in the steering column. Checked all fuses, haven't checked for vaccum leaks, MAF is installed correctly. Maybe it's all just a ton of different problems, but it seems that many of these issues are most likely related. Let me know if the info isn't clear.

I would be completely shooting from the hip, but it would seem like an immobilizer or security issue

The car would not have started up if it was an immobilizer. Lol something we found out once.

If idling rough, you better check for leaks.

im going with separate issues here. the idle being ok with the maf unplugged i would try cleaning the maf and checking for boost leaks around the intercooler. The not being able to get over 3k rpm and the tps sensor circut low seem like they would be tied together. i would check the wires running to the tps as well as cleaning it(if thats possible) else look for a new tps.

Anyone know of how to test the TPS sensor? We unplugged it and tired to start it and it didn't start, but I doubt that means its not working. As far as the security, isn't there something called "valet mode" that the car could be stuck in? As in maybe the guy who owned the totalled STI had a cobb tuner or something and the app is still loaded, because just resetting the ECU won't clear a map on the ECU...

Will check further into leaks around the intake manifold/intercooler...

I did. We took the whole harness (engine bay, interior, HVAC system, dash) from the STI except the rear harness which has the same pinout....

    1. Did you maybe connect the green plugs together under the dash? only needs to be connected when flashing.
    2. Anything stuck on the throttle plate? Dirty throttle blade maybe?

Okay, just taking a stab at what i can identify here..

7 & 3 will be related. on the later models, usually cruise will be disabled when a CEL is thrown. so the cruise light comes on.

    2. This is probably due to an air leak before the throttle body... or at the throttle body. or wiring to the maf sensor.
if you unhook the maf, it should go to MAP scaling for things like idle and throw a code. the MAP being fed data right from the plenum will have the correct data regarding how much air/vac is there to make the engine idle right. if you've got the maf plugged in, it'll use the data from the maf, and if there's an air leak between the MAF and the plenum, it would have the wrong data, and try and compensate.

    1. is possibly due to above. bad maf data can do alot of cool things to a car.

4, 5, and 6 are all wiring issues.

Seemed to be the closest to what we ended up figuring out. Picked up a pedal assembly out of a 2006 legacy

Thanks for all the help. Figured out the main issue...the DBW sensor on the gas pedal was broken. We had plastic welded the cap back on and kinda forgot about it. But the leads inside were not contacting properly - making the throttle position sensor appear faulty when it was further up the line (closer to the foot). This made the DCCD work, it idle better however still not the best (maybe just needs a tune?). And for the rest the steering wheel just needed to be straightened out I think. Now I just have to replace the knuckles because they are bent then I will be in business with my STI swapped bugeye!

I think the wipers need to be rewired, defrost stopped cycling but is now just stuck on. Not a big deal though. Found out yesterday that 2 knuckles are bent, so those are on order from subaru. I guess that's what I get for getting a totalled car!

So last night, I had so much fun with this car.
Took about an hour to find the leak.
There was only 1 bolt holding the throttle body to the intake manifold. LOL!
Then on our tooning adventure, 3/4 way through and it began to snow. Wiper blades not working, heater turned ac cold (really f-ing wierd), the windshield was frozen. Haha. Made it home safe, though I wonder how the other 2 guys are...

Assuming your using the STI harness/connector and 02 WRX wiper motor re-pin the STI connector it to:

1-Green/White - Currently pin 5 on STI harness
    2-Red - Currently pin 4
    3-Black/Blue - Currently pin 1
    4-Black - Currently pin 2
    5-Yellow/Black - Currently pin 3

So...tried repining the wipers. Didn't seem to work. Going to double check this weekend though.

HVAC is acting funky. Sometimes it like to blow heat, other times cold air. Coolant level is good, engine temp is normal (not thermostat). Going to check plugs and the little hose thingy that gets the ambient temperature from the cabine to the HVAC system...Any other ideas?

The other day, I drove it pretty aggressively since I fixed the boost leaks and now I hear what sounds like lifters ticking. Going to change the oil tomorrow because I'm sure there's plenty of sludge since the motor sat in a junk yard setting for a few months. But any input on that would be welcome as well!!

So figured out the HVAC problem. There's a loose connection to the defrost/mid/upper/lower selector knob. Just have to tighten that up somehow!

The TPS is just a rheostat (if they are still like they were 15 years ago). The most basic test is to see if the resistance changes when you go through it's range of motion. The next step is watch voltage with it plugged in, and the key on. I don't know specifics, but I believe you have to somehow watch voltage in the harness and it should change as you move the throttle plate. The place I worked at had "special" alligator clips with a super-sharp and thin probe that would go through the insulation.

We did eventually figure this problem out. It was actually in the pedal itself. There is a position sensor for the pedal itself that was broken. Thanks for the info, hopefully it will come in handy in the future

alright, so the wipers work on the high setting, except they move really slow. So does anyone have a 2002 WRX wiper wiring diagram? It's not the switch on the steering column because I was to use jumpers with the same results as when the switch is being used..

The first diagram I posted is the 02 WRX wiper diagram. Which combination switch assembly are you using on the wheel? Are those connections all factory?

Duh! I didn't see that they were side-by-side, wow that was smart on my part. The setup I have is STI steering column, STI wiper switch, STI wiring harness, WRX wiper motor. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe the wiper motor from the WRX isn't the original and is from a different model?

I can pull up diagrams for other years when I get off work but I can't imagine there would be another year with a 3rd unique pin-out for the motor. So it will only work when the switch is on high (any other setting does nothing?) and it is slow?

Are you sure you have all your chassis grounds connected? I would check B8-2 (black) and B70-2 (black) for continuity to ground. Also confirm with the key at ACC you have +12v at B8-3 (Yellow/Black) to ground and B70-17 (Yellow/Black) to ground

Thanks, I will try checking the voltage on those two...I am almost positive all the ground are connected, but I will double check. The windshield wiper fluid sprayers also do work, but the wipers will not move like they are supposed to when the button is depressed.

Unless you toasted one of the motor windings with the power improperly applied from the original pin-out

Talk a friend into letting you try theirs with your harness

Yeah a quick glance at how it would have been wired when you plugged it in, it was applying constant 12v to the motor.

Testing procedure for 02 WRX wiper motor:

    1. When the battery is connected to the terminal of connectors, confirm that motor operates at low speed.

    View attachment 23759

    2. When the battery is connected to the terminal of connectors, confirm that motor operates at high speed.

    View attachment 23760

    3. Connect the battery to terminals of connector, and remove the terminal connector with motor rotated to low speed, and stop the wiper motor through operation.

    View attachment 23761

    4. Connect the battery and confirm that the motor stops at automatic stop position after the motor operates at low speed again.

    View attachment 23762

Looks like the pin-out change coincides with the armature design change MY04+. I can only find the two pin-outs I posted earlier so that rules out you having a different wiper motor.

Got a new wiper motor! works great. Except during install I must have set the motor in wrong with the wiper transmission thingy because the wipers start in the middle, start going down, go all the way up and stop in the middle of the widshield...Oh well, should be an easy fix...

You need to make sure the motor has made a complete cycle and stopped at its rest position before attaching the armature.

yea, I probably didn't let it resent to it's resting position when the motor was out...

Found another problem yesterday though I've been putting off but since this event I realized it's important to fix. So the ABS light has been on and originally I though no big deal, but yesterday someone cut me off on I-94 so I had to slam on the brakes. The brakes locked up and wouldn't release when I took my foot off. So, what is the best way to check the ABS code? can a normal reader read it or something like learning view or STI scan read the ABS or is there another plug for the ABS that I have to plug jumpers into and read the blinking ABS light? I also am going to check the following though: Bleeder valves, master cylinder resivoir (it is full), correct brake line connections to ABS controller.

Sorry, to bump an old thread, but I am having the same EXACT problem psychorunner ran into with his swap concerning the windshield wipers. I tried clicking on the attachments but they cannot be found. Any chance someone can provide links to the appropriate schematics?

    TO THE RESCUE!!!
Wow I totally forgot about this... anyways what year diagrams do you need? Not sure why embedded images aren't working. Either lost during the forum upgrade or were links to my old site I lost. At any rate if you are doing a post 04 harness into a pre 04 car the pinout at the motor mentioned above should be correct.

Oh man thanks! This sounds like this will finally solve my wiper problem. Been only driving the car around on nice sunny days.

Just to confirm, I'm using an 05 Sti harness on a 02 wrx.

Threshld1: do you have the diagram for the description of the pinouts in your previous post #16?
