I've never been much of a project thread guy. I suppose that's why I typically learn things the hard way. Anyway, I've been asking a few of you for input for the past few months, so I'll post up here for anyone that wants to follow along or give advice. I bought the car a few years ago and did the typical bcs, exhaust, tune. After getting into autocross, it got coilovers, sway bars and sticky tires. Late last summer, I wanted more and went E85 still on the stock vf39. I was super happy with it, but I've got a couple fast buddies that I needed to keep up with. Here's a video from a weekend trip last summer and the Amery Airport speed run. I knew I wanted more but didn't want to chance it on the stock motor. Before I knew it, drop-in pistons and a 20g turned into a new built motor and rotated twinscroll setup. Here's where it stands. We sprayed the engine bay and fender lips on Saturday. Hoping to have things back together sometime in June. Here's a few pictures from the weekend. It always bothered me that my engine bay was the wrong color, so what better time to fix that.
Nice looking car! I wish I had the motivation to pull my engine because i didnt like the color under the hood..
Love it! Wish I knew you were doing some cgm paint work, I've got a rear bumper that needs some tlc and a brand new unpainted front one. Be sure to keep us updated.
We'll probably be spraying the underside of my hood and a wingless decklid sometime in the future. Unfortunately, I only bought a quart of PPG and what's left appears to be just enough to finish what I was hoping to do. If plans change, I'll let you know.
Seems to be some Grimmspeed parts in this even. Can't wait to see it in person, hopefully out at Amery again!
I was waiting for the part where the plane lifts off the run way. Very nice thread, congrats and thanks for taking the time to share your love with us.
Ha! Everytime I watch that video I keep expecting myself to hit the brakes and then I shift again and lay into it. Wish the car would be ready sooner, as I had the FTD at both Amery events last summer and I'd love to go defend my title. Oh well!
Tom just added a new 18 turn touge event on a WI road this summer. Maybe it's time to set a new record at a new event. Good luck.
I wish! For the time being, the new event is limited to older cars to keep speeds down while they introduce it to the local community.
Here are a few randoms. The 83-75 next to the vf39 that it's replacing. And the intake manifold that I've definitely gone overboard on. Almost ready for powdercoat. Finally, a PSA. Replace your oil pickup with a more robust aftermarket one, folks! Do it before this happens.
Haha, busted. Big thanks to Nuke and Fuji for answering questions and making suggestions. Also to Fobia for the same and his welding services.
Motor should be back this week. Hoping to send the heads somewhere in the next couple weeks. All I've gotta do then is find some head studs and start putting things back together. If that pile of parts in the basement doesn't start disappearing soon, my girlfriend is gonna stop believing my "stuff for work" story.
lol, lucky devil. If I had a pile of car parts and tried to tell Jenni that it was 'stuff for work', she'd kill me
just stumbled on this build thread now...I'm curious to see the results, and how fast that massive turbo spools...given its twin scroll
Things have been moving along slowly, too much going on! I'm really enjoying that I have no desire to rush this. I know it'll be exactly what I want when I'm done. I expect the motor to be back in the car in a week or so. I'll post some updates then!
We're getting somewhere now. Still moving slowly, just too much going on. Got the long block assembled and set in over the weekend though. Now I've just got a handful of bits and pieces to tie up.
HUGE thanks to Nuke and crew for coming over on Saturday night to help me get this thing started! Now for some long break in miles. This will test my patience.
New clutch, new cams, new motor. Gotta get my exhaust welded up so that I can break it in during the day without attracting too much unwanted attention at at night without angering neighbors!
Makes me jealous I never got the chance to finish mine up. I'll be seeing you around in the Blaine area though!
