i have a 02 wrx, it started to have a knockinging noise when in first gear, after changing gears there is no more noise. only happens in 1st gear, i think it is the trans, what is it and has any one also had this happen? can it be fixed? should i change fluids? do i need new trans? how long will it last till it goes out? any help would be much appreciated thnks
I think more info is needed like 1. does the kocking sound occur when sitting still? 2. does the knocking increase with speed/RPM? 3. if the knocking happens when moving, does it still knock with the clutch depressed? 4. does turning alter the sound? 5. what is the general speed of the knock? if the knocking happens while in motion you probably shouldn't drive the car too far before having someone look at it.
it only happens when moving in first gear. cant hear it at idle or when clutch is pressed. i think i can feel it in the shifter slightly. once shifted, there is no more knocking, it does get louder/faster when accelerating in first gear.
yea it goes away when i press on the clutch, only when moving and in first gear, if it is the bearing, how to fix, any one do it cheap? what should i do
well is it ok to drive, just not use first gear too long? seems like other gears there is no noise. or should it be parked. will it seize the tranny, leave me stranded, or more of an annoyance?
I haven't heard anything definitive if it is the throwout bearing you can go for a while if not it should not be diven much, if you had fluid for a change it would be interesting to pull the drain and look for metal chunks or filings my money is on missing teeth from first gear, which isn't a huge deal other than the teeth are still in there, that can get bad heres the real question, if you push in the clutch while still moving does it click till the cars stops or does it stop clicking as soon as the clutch pedal is depressed even if the car is moving?
you are probably safe to drive, most likely it is your throwout bearing, depending on how obad the sound is you could be okay indefinatly. I would have someone from the club listen but most likely you are hearing a non-harmful noise. my miata makes a sound that almost sounds like my co-workers TDI, untill the clutch is depressed. There are a couple of reasons why you aren't hearing this noise in higher gears. First the bearings resistance will stbe overcome by the speed of the engine and stop rotating. Second the engine makes more noise at higher R's and masks the sound of the throwout. Have it checked!
