I'm new to this ham radio stuff. I'm not licensed yet but I plan on taking the test as soon as work slows down. But the reason for the thread is, what frequencies are worth programming into my radio?

I'll be using the radio mostly up north at the rallies and maybe with skywarn around St. Could some day. I know at ofr this year they used 147.570 simplex I think. Is it the same every year? Are there any others for snow drift, lspr or anything else cool happening I should be aware of? And my last one...is there any good repeaters around? I've looked at the repeater list and there's a ton but I'm trying to limit how much I put in my radio. I have to send it out and pay for programming (need an old dos-based computer and some motorola voodoo).

I think that's it for now...

Ojibwe has always used 147.57 simplex as the primary frequency. That's not to say that it always will in the future. There is an android app called "Repeater Book" that will show the repeater frequencies for your location.

I would also recommend that you look at this:

modern radio, no need to send out for programming.

Cool thanks. I do have a Baofeng UV-5R, but this motorola I'm foolin with puts out 110 watts. I'll have less than $200 into it by the time I'm done. So I ok with jumping though a few hoops.

I found the list of all the skywarn repeaters, so there all going in and all the common simplex frequencies too. I can put up to 128 frequencies in this bad boy so I'm thinking I'll fill the rest with repeater starting along I94 and working my way out.
