Location: Dakota County Technical College Update: This past Saturaday Jan 31. BMW had their Winter CCC. I was assisting with the Classroom Instructions and some how managed to get two requests to go on track from two students in the afternoon. One with a Nissan Armada and the other Volvo Wagon both with AWD capability and one with Turbo. Both was a joy to drive. The Volvo owner had complained about turbo lag and sloppy steering. But we quickly showed him another perspective to see the cars potential and what he could learn from being patient and using this as a tool to improve his driving skills. And the other, a lady who was looking for a bit more thrill than what was present to here from the morning session. We drove the Armada in RWD, AWD and switched between traction control on and off. This car was alot of fun to drive around the course, thru the slalom and especially in the skid pad. I was able to get her to start drifting around and boy did that put a smile on her pretty face from cheeck to cheeck. I guess we'll be seeing her again after that experience and I'm sure we'll see the Volvo owner as well. My friend who had spend a lot of money building his black M3 for the HP and NASA racing series has decided to sell his car after learning the series has opted out of holding events at tracks withing 6-8hr driving distances for 2009. So he decided to get this nice Red Porsche for the Porsche club racing series instead. I had asked to take a look at the car, but instead I received a kind gesture to take her out for spin. I didn't do much with her around the track, one lap and than it was off to hwy 42 for a quick sprint. Boy did she make me miss my 240sx, too bad she is sitting on blocks in my garage. The next time I see this Porsche she'll have race seats, cage and more. He promised to make sure the seats are adjustable so I can drive it. LOL And we'll switch cars sometime in the summer and exchange some ideas. Over all the event was a complete success, we had more than half the capacity which made our jobs easy, but lots of seat time for our students. The morning DCTC track was awsome, white snow all over the track, the school plowed some areas two track lanes wide. I was able to get some sideway action with the Forester with the assistance of the Ebrake. It would of been fun if we had these conditions thru out the day. By afternoon the sun had starting shining bright and the snow was starting to melt, alot of the track surf was now wet and pavement was starting reveal itself. The inconsistant surf made it more challenging to drive, but a lot of fun. We had to resort to drifting in the skidpad where there was still enough snow on the surface to have some fun. This upcoming MnSOC CCC at DCTC should be a lot of fun, if there isn't snow on the track we'll be doing our best to get mother nature to show us some MN lovin, and if nothing than we'll get some snowblowers. LOL See ya this weekend!!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/northstarbmw/sets/72157613206757741/

if my project ride is done by then, I'll sign up If not, I'll try to sign up with someone elses car (maybe my camry)
You know exactly what I mean. Soft suspension and low hp, threshold will be much easier to reach and more feed back. All positive reasons.
None that will require a handful of dollar bills. But I am working putting one together with MNSOC. We have some really cool ideas we are researching to do that will make a lot of fun.
The one event from last year was real fun. Everyone was out on the track doing their own thing. We all got in A LOT of seat time, so just thought I'd ask.
You need to move to MN so you can start picking up the slack! LOL Remind me next time I see you we can work on some more and other cool stuff. Maybe mr. Nuke will let you drive his car again, or better yet Mt. Fuji's new Black Mamba. But I don't know if you're ready for that monster. I scared Fuji at that event you mentioned, I can't wait to see what the new machine will be like, I'm might even scare myself.
LOL Like a Sixth sense its not! It's really no surprise by now. Mt Fuji has pretty much let the cat out of the bag. What I'm most interested in this new development is will the power be delievered as violent as the previous. Maybe next time you can be in the passenger seat when I pilot the BM around DCTC! Than we can pretend you're the same reporter from HmongTimes! Except this time we'll have a camera ready. Your face is going to turn pale white, and you'll look as if you had just seen a ghost. LOL
Maybe after I get a degree in something then I'll try to get a job in MN or if that PLAN works out. You two know what I mean!
Hello-- Spring is here, and so is the next round of North Star BMW driving schools! On Saturday, April 18th, we will have an Advanced Car Control Clinic at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount. This is a great opportunity to work on your car control skills, enjoy your car, or get some advance practice completed before May's Performance Driving School at BIR. This school is filling up, only a few spots left! The next North Star Chapter Performance Driving School at BIR will be held Friday, May 29 - Sunday, May 31. This is the weekend following Memorial Day. It should be more summerlike than we're used to for our Spring school. We will be running the new short, competition track. In addition to our standard Saturday & Sunday school, we are offering a Saturday-only option as well. Here are some details related to the event: ** Friday instructor/advanced student driving day ** Last October, we required instructors who have not driven the new short track prior to our event to attend Friday's track day to learn it. This time Friday's focus will be on instructor development. The instructor development will be for all levels of instructor; senior to instructor candidates. Advanced students may inquire to join in and drive on Friday. Please contact Chief Instructor John Biesecker at [email protected] with your interest and for approval. The cost will be $150 for Friday. ** North Star Chapter brings you Motorsportreg.com registration ** To begin, visit http://www.motorsportreg.com to create your account. Add 'BMW CCA - North Star Chapter' to your Club Memberships, and our events will show up the Calendar. Please note: club membership is required to attend driving schools. Register before May 1st and receive the early-bird discount for the Saturday/Sunday school! If you have any questions or issues with using Motorsportreg.com, please let us know at [email protected] or [email protected]. ** Other details ** We will be staying at the Comfort Suites on 371 in Baxter. The club has stayed here many times, and our rates are $89.00 per night/$99.00 per night with waterpark pass. When making your reservation, mention that you are with the 'BMW club'. The block of rooms for the club are reserved through May 1st. Rooms are available to the public after May 1st. Comfort Suites can be reached at (218) 825-7234. For our Saturday night dinner, we will be back at the Prairie Bay Restaurant next to the Comfort Suites. The great dinner, service, and private group room should hit the spot after a day at the track on Saturday. The cost is $20 per person. Please join us on Thursday evening, April 30th from 6:00 - 8:00pm at Orr Autosport in Eden Prairie for our BIR tech inspection evening before the event. All drivers must have their car teched in advance to the event and bring a completed tech form with them. Orr Autosport will also provide track-side support at the event; THANK YOU! Our schools at BIR are successful from an organization standpoint, in large part because of several volunteers helping during the weekend. The BIR event organizers are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help. Duties would include helping out at the registration table on Friday night/Saturday morning, assisting with school support activities in the morning, etc. Volunteers can receive instructor rides on the track, free admittance to the Saturday night dinner, and our sincere thanks! Please contact [email protected] with interest in helping out. This club is based on volunteers, and we could not pull off quality events without them! And finally, please be sure to read the BIR Welcome Packet in advance to the event: http://northstarbmw.org/drivingschools.aspx?ns=Forms Thanks for your time and hope to see you soon!
April 18th yes, that sounds like fun! :eek3: oh, wait it's my wifes B-day should I go? :ugh: Probaly not I talk about car enough Her B-day is off limits. I'm going to try for some of your other events since I want to drive my subie and learn how to drive it well
The 18th event is completely sold out. We have 52 registered and 20 are staff. My KGB friend is coming and a few others to hang out and help out on the track. I have a GoCam now so when and if you do come Mike L. we can position it at your face, I wonder what expressions we'll capture from that, and it will likely end up on Youtube. LOL Do you have a name for your car yet, if not you might want to start thinking of one. I will usually write up a review of the cars I've test driven at our events, so it would be fun to use a cool name to represent your car. Your car should be a lot of fun to drive at a track like DCTC just the way it is, I guarentee it!!!
I want to go!!!!!! But its Julies B-day I have car stuff almost all year but the B-day is off limits It her day. I want to come I think the camera would be really fun to watch. I'm considering the spring performance driving school May 29th to the 31st @ BIR I know it requires the Tech inspection on April 30th. Do you recomend this event? What do I need to pass tech inspection, Your old My new tires are worn (I don't think they'll pass inspection) could you tell me your thoughts? -Michael Loch Loch Jewelers
That's right family comes first! Regarding tech inspection its just the usual stuff, you really just need to make sure you car is safe. Personally I won't recommend BIR unless you've had some short track experience just to get familiar with your car. I've never seen you drive, but if you follow instructions well you should not worry too much. A few days with a instructor will set you right. If you plan to drive at least 7/10 of what your capable of on every session for the weekend, you'll need more rubber. Check out the tech sheet and come to the Tech Session at Orr's. Its free and they will tell you what you'll need to fix if any and you can get your other questions answered there. Keep in mind BMW wants all their drivers to bleed their brake fluid prior to the event, and cannot be more than 90 days old. http://www.northstarbmw.org/forms/tech_inspection.pdf
best short tracks in the area? I also signed up for a novice driving class through mn sport car/ autocross fot this coming weekend so I'll get some good pointers and i'll grt real learned.
As far as todays event goes, you really didn't miss out on much just the usual suspects. Some nice cars like a Modena Ferrari, Lotus, but of BMW, S14 and a few AWD Subarus. We were behind scheduled today so it made it kinda busy and before I knew it, lunch time had arrived. But the subaru guys and myself stayed on the track testing a few cars. A black 02 WRX with fancy gears, good power, but not enough brakes and tires to help keep the speed up on the track. ABS kept kicking in and the stock tires yelling at us it didn't want to attack the track anymore. The next car was a white Impreza with mt. Fuji's famous head works, STI brembo and more; we took her around a few laps just for good measure and she did pretty well, although the rear tires were rubbing against the fenders. Over all very good impression of what's to come in the near future. This should be a fun car on DCTC. I got to hang out with a very old friend who was also my A student for the day; I call him my KGB friend because he's RedHeat. But really he's just a regular guy from the honda days. He drove a 05 stock STI with some pretty good rubber and a low bride race seat. This was a lot of fun to finally get to see what Ben's been up to, traveling all around the world and seeing various tracks including Japan. Thanks again for coming out and letting me savor your beautiful STI. My B student was a 19yr old male who drove a stock V6 Gold Mustang with winter dunlop tires. He was kinda green in the morning but you won't of know that if you had met him by the end of the day you won't of known. By the end of the day he was so smooth and quick I wouldn't of believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself. I've never driven a Stange so it was a treat to drive. Not too many ponies for the over weight Ford, but she tracked beautifully for a big girl. After I adjusted to the high clutch sitting position she started dancing around like she was on ice. Did almost everything I asked and was fairly easy to manage. At the end of the day, his dad hitched a ride with us and was very please to see his son's confidence had improved significantly. I had to make a last request considering how well he had been doing and who know when I'll get to test drive another Stang. So I got a chance to drive her one last time at the end of the day. So it happens, another instructor in a BMW, a colleague of mine decided he was going to persue use on the track in his Silver E36. He would get close at the turn in, but as soon as we exited it we quickly pulled two cars and sometimes more depending on where we were on the track. He later came over and told me he had a hard time getting his lines right especially with that big gold rearend blinding his view. LOL As for the RedHead, the new BC Inverted did the job compared to the orginal Megan's. I spent the last few nights after work trying to put her back together and it paid off. Last night was a pretty long night trying to make final adjustments after a quick test drive around the country roads. I'll need to get her realigned and balanced but after todays test I am very happy with the results. She is more settled thru the corners, predictable, easy to recover and really fun to drive, felt really quick around DCTC until the tires started to cook. I was so busy trying to take care of my friends by giving them rides during lunch that I forgot to setup the GoPro Camera, so we have to footage for proof, so if you're interested you'll have to wait till July or when ever. I wanted to thank Nuked Performance, Cha and Vandde for helping with fixing my power steering hose which became a problem and caused the Redhead to not make it back onto the track for the second half. I'll post some pictures once's BMW has made it available. This was another awsome weekend, just the way I'd like to spend it.
The only short track that local clubs host events is DCTC that I know of. It's got a little of everything that will help sharpen your skills. Thats a start. If you keep an open mind and are quick to adapt you should be fine, just becareful to not make others bad habits yours. LOL
great event to learn a lot about your car. If you think its to short, its not unless your pushing some serious hp and even then it would be damn fun since you could just slide the car around! Thanks Chong..dont forget its 4/20 hahaha
Thanks for the reminder, it helps when you're returning back from worp speed. Anyway lets cross some notes here; from the passenger seat what were some differences you noticed when we were driving your STI that you had not noticed before coming to this event? 2. What did you think of your car after the event? 3. Did you feel this program helped improve your driving? 4. What was the ride like in the S14 from your seat? Yes, those KDW tires were the limiting factor, but it also made it alot of fun. I ask because its a good self eval that helps me improve my coaching techniques. Many thanks!
As far as your question, there are mechanical limiting factors for every car, condition and situation, the unlimited factor should be the driver. Often you'll hear other STI owners complain about how bad it push's and now you know why. I do my best to work with it, you probably didn't notice it much when I was driving, but she was telling me plenty of times, I just kept telling her she could and she did. It was fun to see you grab the O Sheet handles and squeal just a little in your own car. LOL
Well I just registered for the May 29-31 event for BIR. I will be making my reservations for the Hotel very soon before its all booked up and the end of the month to get the discounted price. I was just browsing the list of entrants and boy there are some really nice cars I'd like to be paired up with for that weekend, it would be a great new challenge. Currently there are two Nismo including myself and for Subaru's one 05 LGT and the usual BMW's & Audi's. As for exotics, there is the Silver Ferrari Modena and M Noble. Over 60 entries so far, BMW & Audi are partnering up for this event so it would be nice to see some Audi friends again. I have some things I'll need to take care on the car in preparation for this event. But more importantly I'll need some friends to help me bring some spare wheels/tires and equipment to the track. It would be nice to have a small crew out there to help with things and to enjoy the weekend with again. I better start assembling the team.
My driver front coilover strut blew out last week while running around trying to get the rest of the car ready. The manufacture has one in route and should be here in time for the event. Well I've never been paired up with an Audi student at our joint events. I am curious if anyone would let me test drive one of your beautiful Audi's at this event? I wonder how different they are compared to a Subaru's AWD system. Just another two more weeks and its off to the high speed short technical track. I still only see one LGT subaru on the roaster.
I'm back to a car that is trackable...almost I was hoping to be able to make the BMW event this year, but unfortunately will be in NY that weekend. Oh, and that's right, I finally got another car that is trackable...booyah! I'll post up some specs once everything is finalized and i get it. It's not a subaru, but it'll still be fun Man, having an SUV made me a boring driver/car enthusiast
So you got another BMW? I was starting wonder what you've been up too. Time for some RWD action. I got a new car as well.
I know this isn't a bmw forum...but I certainly have the most fun talking cars out here. Anyway, here's a link to the pics of it. It is officially mine...but not officially in my hands until I figure out if I want it shipped of if I want to do a road trip. I'm excited to get back on the track. Car is also going to have a tune to go with the upgraded manifold. Should ad moderate hp/tq as well as some additional rpm's...MAM is painful without this Anyway, here it is. What is your new car? Do you still have the nissan, or did you get something else? http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1235693 I'm telling you, having an SUV was seriously just a boring phase of driving in my life. I put 20k miles on the car in 8 months (comfortable for sure), but was so bored to be driving. Figure now I'll make it out to forums a bit more as well as make it out to some events as well. Getting excited.
This thread is the closest thing to a BMW forum as you're gonna get. LOL So what happen to the black M3? So we went from Black to White. LOL Yeah, I still have the red S14, still sorting her out. It would be nice to see you back at a track together for an event. How soon will you be getting this new ride?
Ha, well, we'll see about timing. I'm in NY next weekend and should really be driving it back then...but I may not have enough time to shoot up to Boston to get it...so I may have to wait until one of the weekends after. Just trying to figure out when we'll both be available. As far as the black e46 M3 (black), it was far too expensive to use as a track car. I couldn't justify continuing to go about beating it up on the track. I also had a bit of a life change at the time...so I moved to an SUV for a bit. But, things are stabilizing a bit now and I'm really missing a car...so, I set off a few months ago looking for an older M3 and found this white one on Tuesday night. It's been a long search. Tried every avenue to find one, and just wasn't having luck...but finally found this one and a few others at the same time. Made an offer on this one and am not just waiting until the day I get to drive it. It's not easy having my car 1300 miles away. WANT IT HERE NOW! Ha, I'll be out at the track soon...probably MAM for a fast friday (most track time and most convenient. See you out there. Mike
Sounds very much like deja vu; except I headed northwest to Seattle, WA to get mine. You might be safer just having it transported. I'm glad I did, it would of been a pita to drive my S14 all the way home. This car is not so great for driving on the public roads. Anyways, I'm glad to see you're doing alright. We should hook up and compare some driving notes and see how things are going. You should bring it DCTC sometime and we can check it out, its a lot closer to home. I am looking at Time Attack events for next season if the car does well this year, but its going to require some more money. Good luck with the new M3.
Ha, I'd love to get the car asap...but I also have a GF who wants to do a road trip...so, what to do I'm guessing this thing is going to ride a little more comfortably that the S14 on the road
I'll be at BIR next weekend. Mushashi, I traded you turbos a couple years ago. FP Green for something else. I'll be up there with my Porsche 924s SP1 prepped car. You guys might remember me...I had the Blue WRX that completely caught on fire after a minor fender bender. I've basically traded-in all street fun for track-only fun. Much safer, more exciting.
Hi Andrew, How can I forget, you were so helpful to me. I look forward to seeing you at this weekends event, and want to hear all about your new 88 Porsche 924S track car. Sounds like a hoot to drive just thinking about it. Looks like the three of us have somethings in common. All came from Subaru's and now went to RWD weekend vehicles. It was sad to hear about what happend to your Scooby, but its nice to see you are back in it again. There should be some HIN models coming to this event on Friday if you want take some pictures. And 1fastbadger, I don't think I've ever been a BMW that doesn't ride better than my S14. LOL
Yo Andrew, what happend to ya bro. We got talking on Friday morning and I saw ya out on the track a few times while we were testing and than that was it. Hopefully things is okay. I really wanted to catch a ride in your new Porsche. It was really nice to see you out there.
