Out of a Forester of some sort. bought it from a recycler, so I've never had it installed in anything. but I pulled the cover, and it looks to be in great shape. put a couple axles in it, and the LSD is definitely stronger than I am..... $100. I'll be in the cities Thu-Sun.
Because yours is an overpriced open diff. Also, the only USDM cars to get 4.444s are Outbacks and Foresters. not really a bit market for them. I might swap it to 4.111 with the parts I've got from the XT6 tonight.
no the 444 i have is lsd as well as the 411 i have. the one that is in my car right now is the the open diff.
Done. So now it's a 4.111 VLSD. carrier from a forester diff, ring/pinion/case from a '99 RS. I ran that case in my XT6 for most of last year, no noises, no leaks. if a mod could change the title, that'd be super awesome.
BUMP. I'm throwing it in the trunk of the celica to come with me today. with a selection of rear covers (short studs, long studs, no studs).
Right! I forget that they're more common behind a 4EAT. look no further. I'm at my parent's house west of the cities now, and I'll be up in Maple Grove much of tomorrow.
i dont have that kind of cash laying around right now either not sure if i need to swap axels either from what im told i need a 4.111
If what's in its a r160 you should be fine unless its a r160 out of something like a type ra like one of the diffs I have
the r160 is a rear differential, made by Hitachi Ltd. Differentials: A set of gears that allows a wheel to turn.
crap.. so i got the wrong diff? cause i got a 5spd, i was told i needed the 4.111 as it was an outback...
I thought 98 OBS 5MT was 4.111. And R160 refers to the size of the rear differential. It means the ring gear (or crown gear) is 160 mm in diameter. And a differential is what allows the wheels to turn independently of each other. Most of this information is contradictory to what has already been posted in this thread, lol. ~Dan
I thought it would be too. but Fuji would know better than most.... Easiest way to know for sure (assuming there isn't a sticker on the rear diff with the ratio). there's a transmission serial number on the bellhousing by the starter. throw that into google, and you'll be able to find the axle ratios pretty quickly.
No worries, You are saved! http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t99509-diy-rear-diff-convert-open-vlsd.html Example of what to look at. VLSDs. 2.5RS on the LSD, old skool VLSD on the right Open diff
^yep. and it's a new-style VLSD. so no grinding necessary on the case. I've done it about a dozen times, but it only took me about 20 minutes to throw it in that 4.111 case.
alright.. im gonna do it tomorrow, ill let you know how it works out, probably wont take pics as i want to get it done...
um....good for you? I am honestly amazed at your ability to make posts with zero relevant information. Only thing I would add to that write-up. is make sure you lock-tite the ring gear bolts. the first time I did it, I did not. And about a year later when I took it apart, they had all backed out about halfway.
i was planning on using the red loc-tite anyways.. even though they dont spec it, i use it on everything thats important... like flywheel bolts and such... id rather do it once and not have to deal with it again
got it done today, took like an hour to swap the diff and dump in fluid, but took me another hour to drain and fill the transmission.... OMG suck feels ok so far, but not sure what an lsd in the rear should feel like.. trippy?
