have a 2011 wrx stock wheels 5x100 Been looking for a set of wheels for track days been trying to find something in a 8" to 9" width to fit a 245. Wheel option seem to get more limited with the 5x100 when getting into the larger widths. How tough would it be to convert to a 5x114.3? (extra bonus is then it would also be the same as my other car so have other wheel option) any thoughts are welcome thanks,
It would be cheaper to have a company like ccw make you some custom wheels... hubs, rotors, front knuckles, front struts, front axles, etc... if you go with an sti 5x114 swap.
Or hold off until you find an STI 6mt to swap which would include everything Sheen listed above... Sounds expensive yet fun.
I dont understand the fascination with 6speed swaps. For the money Id rather upgrade the 5speed box and possibly revise the gearing.
thats kinda wanted to know if it was just a hub to switch or the whole works. looks like i will just need to be happy with a 17x8 for now.
If the ccws are out of budget call up diamond racing wheels. Alternatively, i had my forgestars made in a custom offset and bolt pattern for under 1300 shipped... had to wait 4 months for them and they were through a presale groupbuy, but worth it at the time.
I'm sure there's some wheels out there with both bolt patterns built in. There's a few guys on here running the Drag wheels with at least 9" widths. They are heavy but weight isn't an issue at this point. You could do that and get the summer tires you want or you can get a stickier more track dedicated tire at 235. The issue you'll run into if you go too big on a stock setup is you'll notice less rotation at corner exit; and mid corner if you're kinda crazy like me. Most drivers won't even notice it because they'll see an increase in entry and some mid cornering speeds. You'll notice it if someone's chasing you with a faster car and you're lines are arching; the understeer will be pretty obvious at that point cause you'll be trying really hard to get away with your wider tires. It just won't add up. What's happening here is your rear tires now have a much bigger foot print and your current setup doesn't have enough power or you're out of band to get that rear end to rotate as you did before. You could try and improve it by increasing the tire pressures in the rear or change your lines. But you won't get the same consistent results you're looking for had you gone with a size that matches your vehicles setup offering you the best grip levels and rotation. Grip & Rotation really means operating temp. Bigger is not better when you can't get the tires to work at their optimal temps whether its mechanical or your driving.
I was looking into getting a dedicated track rim and tire. Light rims are not cheap, so was trying to get ones wide enough to grow into if i see the need. more i more in likely wont get any bigger then a 235 but want the option
There a plenty of wheel options for 5x100 that are 17x8 or wider. how wide of tires do you want to be able to fit? You could put a 245 on your 17x8 with no issues.
