I have done 2 auto to manual swaps now and if you are going to replace the trans and you even remotely want to put in a 5 speed its worth it. no custom fabbing of anything is needed, exept maybe some driveshaft merging.

I have a impreza trans for sale if you are interested, I have no use for it as I am now looking for a 6 speed.
    pm me.

you can get to the front diff on an auto without taking apart the whole trans. you still have to set up the mesh on the ring/pinion gear, but it's nothing compared to splitting a 5MT in half :eek3:

you do have to separate the engine and tranny. either just the engine and do it with the trans in the car, or drop the trans. 5MT swap might still be easier.

I've got a FWD 4EAT out of a '92 Legacy you can HAVE. my mother will probably worship you if you come get it out of our garage (or it might be under a tarp next to the garage, I forget where it ended up). known good front diff. if it really is the front diff, you wouldn't need any other parts. just some labor and you'd be up and running.

A while ago I sold the front diff off of my old 4eat to Aegis, since hers died. I know that they arnt going to be replacing it, so perhaps she still has it.

once you get the tranny out its not that hard to swap the front diff. probably less than 10 minutes but the long part is putting the tranny back in...
