I know there have been other threads yada yada.. but I want to ask specific questions..

    Heres what I would like...

wifi ability.. (I like verizon but they dont offer this apparently)

would love to not have to have a data plan (although looking at the Storm)

    touchscreen maybe...

decent sized keyboard.. I hate the push the keys 200 times texting

music not a big deal as I have an ipod

dont care about camera capabilities as I have a Rebel XT for REAL PICS

basically the main things I want it for is accessing the internet (without a data plan needed), texting a lot, and phone calls...

    any suggestions??

I know Eli has HTC.. I liked that one I looked at today but $400+ for the phone... didnt look at plan pricing to be honest...

I really wanted the Storm... but realistically I dont need to be spending $80 a month on a cell phone when a $50 plan would be excessive for me... so that makes the storm a hard sell to the boss

Go with a windows mobile phone then. No need to purchase a data plan like with the blackberry.

Didn't we talk about this last week? You forget already? :p :p

Aagh. Uhm, I'd recommend the HTC Touch (ignore the Instinct, that phone sucks) and go with the Sprint 450 mins + unlimited msgs + unlimited data for $70/month.

You may think you don't need data but most "wifi" phone plans ARE data plans nowadays ... and the GPS is nice (included in the data pack, not all phones support this)

there IS a lot of crap you might not need, but it's nice to know - with mine - I can surf everywhere online with it, not worry about a 5gb "cap" (like aircards have) and use the GPS whenever I need to.

The blackberry is a nice phone, but it's for people who are really on the go. If you don't see yourself using the email and all the other features of the BB data plans, then don't get a frickin blackberry! haha

If you are eligible, the Touch is $20 after mail-in rebates (through a sprint store) or Instant rebates (through Radiosack). Sprint tho, I don't know if verizon has them.

No matter who you go through, remember you will get what you pay for. So why not find the cheapest plan that has what you may need everyday? :p

And you don't want to NOT get a data plan because if you do use the internet at all - at ALL - you will get charged for it. So it's cheaper in the end to get the add-on for data.

blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah :p

Oh, and one more thing ... you can get unlimited EVERYTHING - even internet - through Boost Mobile for $50/month - but their phones are probably a downgrade from what you've got. You won't find a better deal than that, contract phones are going to be more no matter who you are going through. Check with your provider too, there might be discounts through your work or some crap like that.

    suggestions!!!

nto necessarily but htey have great reception at my house in middle of bum **ck no-where.... and I also had decent service when I had sprint out here too...

so you are saying that even with a wifi enabled phone I will get charged to access the internet??

see I just want the convenience to jump on and check my email or whatever if I am in a hotspot, but dont really need to be on it all the time...

it would be nice to have some features like what windows based phones offer.. but ...

    I hate buying phones...

You could do that with the Ipod Touch. If the phone is wifi enabled, you wouldn't get charged at a hotspot. I was confused as to what you were referring to there :)

Don't know about the HTC phone, but the Blackberry Curve (8320) is a wifi phone. Don't know whether you would still need a data plan to use the Wifi connection (as you shouldn't, but phone providers find ways to stick it to you!).

If you can get a GSM phone to work for your provider, and a Wifi Enabled phone doesn't need a data plan to access a Wifi Hotspot, then pretty much any Wifi phone would work. Not all Wifi phones can display full web pages though, so make sure you read plenty of reviews or play with tons of phones so you know it can handle what you need!

My suggestions for phones include anything from HTC. Don't know for sure what they've got, but they're a Don't-****-Around company it seems.

I've got a T-Immobile Wing (HTC) for work. It will do everything you're asking for.

I hate it with a passion.

Let's see... It can never make up it's mind if it wants to use Wi-Fi or EDGE data, so unless you explicitly shut off the one you don't want, you frequently don't get anything (and if you shut off EDGE you lose direct push email).

As a phone, it blows, poor sound, poor reception.

The LCD is dim, and in sunlight it's nearly impossible to read.

Every time you slide the keyboard open the battery door falls off, unless you hold it on (this starts happening when the phone is nearly new and gets worse and worse with time).

The keyboard is so limited (have to shift and alt constantly), that I find it much faster to just use the stylus and the touchscreen. Keyboard just adds bulk in my opinion.

The rest of my complaints are just about the general retardedness of Windows mobile, but that's not really HTC's fault.

I just got a Samsung Saga (Verizon), and yes, it has wifi.
It is pretty sweet. Good screen, good keyboard. it has a touchscreen, but samsung also has a "mouse" type thing that works perfectly.
Plus it is a quad band world phone meaning it works pretty much everywhere (unlike most VZW phones)

I love my Storm, the fee is only $30 more a month for the data plan. Yes it does not have wi-fi but if I am personally going somewhere with wi-fi I will bring my laptop if i'm gonna sit on the internet. Because internet is the suck on your phone no matter how you look at it. I didn't get the Storm to surf the web I got it to use google when I need to find a place on the go, use mapquest and check my email away from home as well. I was also tired of flip and slide phones and no one had a keyboard that I liked. It has worked well for school also as I can also fix documents before I send them to classmates or instructors.

Actually the internet is pretty damn usable on my phone with the opera browser. BRowsed many forums, etc. I've taken by PDA only instead of my laptop in many cases, it is that good.
It just so happens that the browser blackberry put on the storm is a POS.

Wifi is notibly faster than the cell connection, though personally, with any smartphone I'd really want the 3g as well. It is really sueful to be able to do *whatever* whereever you are.

    Newfound abillity of my HTC

Cool! I just figured out how to post with my HTC Touch Pro. I was reading this tread on my phone wishing I could bash this thing and the Opera browser. No need to now :) My biggest comlaint with this phone was I couldn't select the text box to post messages. The screen is a little small compared to other touch phones but the slide-out qwerty is nice (the only difference from a Touch Diamond) Has Windows Mobile, wi-fi, unlimted data, sprint tv, email, turn-by-turn gps, and a bunch of other stuff I will rairly use if ever...but good luck finding a phone that has everything you need and none of what you dont ;)My advice; check Best Buy because the have all the major carriers in one store and tons of phones to look at side by side. I bought this phone there for $100 cheaper than the Sprint store and $50 cheaper than the Sprint website.Hope this helps!

The LG Dare is a nice phone if you decide to stay with Verizon (best provider out there IMO). Touch screen, 3G internet speed and you dont need a data plan. Only thing its missing is wi-fi but im not really a firm believer in wi-fi on a celly.

I feel your pain. Recently did some new phone shopping myself. You can ask for a decent phone that does a bunch of useful things and doesn't require a bunch of cost for crap you don't need - but .... I don't think they listen. ;)

Shibbs, do you have the HTC Touch 300? (I think that's what it is)
if so, HTC has discontinued them for sprint, I don't know where else to get one - without buying it on ebay or something (since I don't know much about verizon)

just FYI, nate, if you like shibbs' phone, you should look for the newer models. Unless your provider is offering it, you won't find it with anyone else :(

    Htc

I would highly highly recommend a Windows Mobile phone from HTC through ATT or Tmobile or any other GSM company or buy one off eBay and unlock it. I am not sure how tech savvy you are but most Windows Mobile phones can be CID unlocked (ROM/OS) and SIM unlocked (carrier specific).

In terms of benefits, the new ones from HTC almost all have a GPS chip unlike other phones that call themselves GPS phones. These require a data plan that tells you where to turn by connecting to a mobile tower. I have an ATT Tilt (HTC Kaiser or 8950) that has a GPS chip, I can remove the SIM card and still get GPS signal. I can be in the middle of a lake and not have any mobile/data connection but still be able to locate myself on a GPS map. The drawback? you have to buy a GPS mapping software. I highly recommend iGuidance 2009 as it has voice directions (most dont). It beats paying $50/month for a data plan.

ATT Fuze or Tilt or almost any other HTC phone will have WiFi will probably be quad band and will probably have 3G. Being that it is Windows Mobile you can install a lot of freeware programs or buy programs and use it like a laptop (almost).

forums.xda-developers.com or howardforums.com are good resources to find out what the PDA phones have to offer and where the future is heading to.

There's a gap between the do-nothing (which still does a lot) and the do everything (which still doesn't do a lot) that really sucks. You're looking at $30-$40 a month or $70-$100 a month mattering on which side of the fence you land on. To me, there are very few features that are worth that kind of change. $40 a month extra over a 2 year contract assuming 3% inflation is well over $1000!!! That's a lot for what amounts to one singular feature: Internet. How many times will you check your email? How many times will you use the web browser in the phone? 20 times in 2 years? That's $50 per use ffs.

Many of the do-nothing phones have internet features that don't require monthly costs. You may get really slow or limited access but it's practically free compared to more feature rich phones. The internet capability of your basic verison free phone is not completely useless keep in mind.

Also, I look at a lot of these feature rich phones and I see a lot of limitations. Stereo bluetooth? No. Make calls and check the web via wifi instead of my cell minutes when you're in a hotspot? No. Tell me when I get new emails? No. Also, I'm a stylus guy. I hate to say it. I prefer a PDA interface to ANY sort of pathetic thumb keyboard. I can't even use those mini-laptop keyboards without going nuts! A lot of these touch screen phones are so cheap that they can't even deal with stylus input which is also a serious turn-off. I guess I'm saying I'd make the jump from do-nothing phone to do-everything phone if they really did everything: Acted like a fully internet capable PDA, MP3 player, and phone with more than a full day's battery life. Not yet, my friend. Not yet.
