ABS Sensor Ring Broken I was replacing a Wheel stud on my rear wheel and after i was all done and drove the car i noticed a ticking noise. So i took the wheels and brakes off and saw this. Im assuming that its cracked and bent and hitting the ABS sensor. So how hard is this to replace now that i have everything apart? Do i remove just this nut and the screws holding the ring in? Anyone know how much one of these rings are?
You'll have to press the hub out of the knuckle to replace that ring. It might be a good idea to replace the bearing too because it might get damaged pressing it apart. Or if you put it back with the same bearing just keep an eye on it since it might fail sooner. I'm not sure if they're the same diameter, but I do have an extra abs ring from a 5/100 hub that I would part with for a LOT less than $103. I can't find the link anymore but there used to be an article on scoobymods showing how to upgrade the rear brakes that included pulling the hub out.
I say... if you can use a welder... get it back to as close to normal and do a light weld on the flat side... it shouldnt throw a code... I have done it in a pinch before on an older car... never threw a code... if need.. come over later tonight or friday evening if you opt to try the weld.. wont hurt it and if it solves your problem.. done.. if not at least you tried..
So its not gonna be a simple fix? I think my roomate may had a welder i could use, ill have to check. Damn this really fking sucks
If you can't weld it, you can take the axle nut off, use a three jaw puller to pull the hub out of the knuckle, replace the ring, then use the axle nut to press the hub back in to the knuckle. I personally think that would shorten the lifespan of the bearing because when you're pulling the hub out you're transferring all that load through the bearing itself. Also you're pushing against the axle to pull the hub out with the puller, which is putting force into the diff. But, people do use this method and I might just be overly paranoid.
Would it be bad for the time being to use some washers to back the abs sensor out a little bit so that it doesnt hit the ring? Doesnt sound like id be able to get a ring until atleast monday or tuesday
How about just take the bolts out holding the ring on and break the ring the rest of the way and take it out? You abs and DCCD wouldn't work, but it won't be hitting anything.
you'll still throw a code and both your abs and dccd will be disabled. when I had a wheel speed sensor die it locked my dccd.
To get the ring out (or back on) you need to pull the hub. When the hub is pulled, half of the wheel bearing will come with it. You could reuse the bearing, but it's not recommended due to the stress put on it from pulling the hub. Plus if you get dirt and what not in there, and the fact that the outer most seal will be pulled as well, and you can't just put a new one in without the bearing in there first... The tone wheel/ring shouldn't have hit anything unless it was bent/cracked from improper service work. It's held in with the four allen screws, and they normally don't move very easily.
Brian can u check on the price of the bearing too. Am I gonna need a press to get that bearing back in?
I disabled the abs on my 04 sti, and it doesn't affect the dccd, I didn't think the 2 systems worked together.
the dccd and abs both read off the abs wheel sensors. look at a fsm wiring diagram, you'll see the abs and dccd are integrated. however, that doesn't mean disabling one system automatically disables the other, the integration between the two is somewhat complicated
I they probably use the same sensor for info, but they both are different systems I would think.. one is to put power to the ground the other is to help NOT put power (ie braking) to the ground
its really the basis of the dccd - monitors individual wheel speed to find out what wheels are slipping
Alright so im picking the parts up today or tomorrow. What special tools am i going to need to get this done? and does anyone have any that i could maybe borrow?
If the DCCD was disabled, wouldn't it go to full open, like when you don't have a controller at all? I'm not the most familiar with the operation of the factory controller.
