Ok guys here is what is going on my 02 wrx ej20.

I just took my ej20 out of my 02 WRX last week to look for the knocking problem. With Fuji's help we were able to take it all apart and found one rod bearing and the rod itselt completely stripped. BP subaru told me that they only sell the rod bearings as a set, and mind as well change all the rods along with the bearings. The parts that I would need to put the engine back together would be as follows.........................

    *engine gaskets $$200
    *timing belt $$100
    *Rod bearings $$200
    *Rod(4 set) $$208

So now all four things add to about $708

Then I would also have to get the block hot tanked, headers cleaned which would probably cost me about $100-$200.The total would come up to be about $$1000. And there might be other things that i need that would add up the total. Im just thinking about just throwing $$600 on top of the $$1000 I would of spent and just get a new block and swap everything on it.

    The big questions would be...........

*What block should i go with 2.0 block or the 2.5 block?
*What would be the difference if i put a 2.5 instead of having the 2.0?
*Would the 2.5 be different on mpg on my 02wrx with the current turbo?

Any other advice would be great.

    Thanks

big difference is for a 2.5 block you're going to have to add the cost of new pistons, whereas i'm assuming you're keeping your old ones. You would also need some form of engine management if you aren't going to just be sticking the stock power unit back in there.

gas mileage isnt much different, I have a 2.5L TD04 WRX and it gets pretty much the same gas mileage as anyone else's 2.0 liters.

ya you will need new internal if you go EJ257, but you could always get a new shortblock which should come ready to rock. prolly be about $1500. you will have gobs more TQ and faster spool with the 2.5l

    2.5l tq = sex

if you buy a new shortblock from the dealership it should include the block, rods, crank, pistons with it. i would double check w/ erik or brian to make sure. pretty much you just need to attach the heads and other stuff to it, IIRC

Hmmm...I guess amr did know that all internals come along...Lol...anyways...

Well since we know putting in a 2.0block would not REQUIRE anymore big items....

My finael question is WHAT WILL WE ALSO NEED TO BUY/CHANGE IF WE PUT A 2.5BLOCK....other then reflashing the ECU...

    Thanks

^^ yeah it comes with all that, you just need to bolt up the heads and other little things like martin said

a shortblock is the engine block, pistons, crank etc, basically everything that sits between the cylinder heads. You can use 2 liter WRX heads on a 2.5L shortblock

A block is simply the engine block, nothing else. No moving parts

A longblock is a shortblock + cylinder heads (essentially a whole engine minus accessories and manifolds)

Yes, the shortblock includes the internals ;)

I'd recommend the 2.0l over the 2.5l (in this case) has from what I've been told the car is going to stay pretty stock and not get modified. The 2.0l won't require reflashing or a different set of gaskets, etc. but rather will just bolt right in.

If you go with the 2.5 block you are totally going to need larger injectors also.

Injectors, fuel pump, head gaskets, custom tune. You need to remember that when you put wrx heads on the 2.5l short block, your compression ratio changes, so you will need to get the thicker head gaskets to bring it back down a little bit, or swap pistons in the 2.5l block.

And they are also running a cr of 8.7:1. Which is fine, but will DEFINITLY need a custom tune.
