Some of you may use an antivirus/internet security software, and some don't.

For those who do, which software do you prefer/recommend?
I'll be purchasing one soon, but testing them out.

I've been using Kaspersky Internet Security and it works great.
Now I'm trying out BitDefender Total Security.
I will be trying out NOD32 next.

    Anything you recommend?
    (BTW, I'm not a fan of Norton/Symantec)

screw norton i use either AVG or kasperski

AVG has a large virus database easy to use and updates practically every day it gives great added security and makes sure your computer has great defense against viruses

Kasperski is very good because though it has a database it picks up on little things that could potentially be a byproduct of spyware or a virus of some sort (so in other words its a semi-intelligent anti-virus)

these two are highly recommended in my book and i go to brown institute for network administration :)

Along with being careful/skeptical of what I run, I use AVG and LavaSoft Adaware on my windows system. So far they've worked fine. I'm the only person who uses my computer, so I just want something that I can scan a file or folder with and do a full scan once in a while. I don't want something overactive that checks every single file I open, etc...

I went from Kaspersky 7 to 8, and didn't like 8 as much, left like it was taking more resources than 7.
But since 8 new, I would expect it getting more updates and stuff like that.

But Kaspersky is in the books for me.

AVG free is nice, but I've caught a few bugs with it before.

for some reason on certain computers..for example my dads...it dosnt want to work all that well i don't get it..but it works rather nice otherwise i would still trust it

As far as I am concerned, there are no problems with symantec. I've used it on hundreds of end-users machines and never ever had a problem.

I'm a big fan of AVG. I'm also a reseller, so I'm biased, but the reason I became a reseller was because I like the product.

The free version will catch every true virus other products will, but what it won't do is spyware/browser hijackers, etc. For that you need the paid version.

If there's any interest, I can look at my margin and see what I could do for an MNSubaru discount ;)

Corporate version or consumer? There's a big difference.

I still stick with HiJackThis and Bazooka. Most infections these days are web surfing related (porn, warez) the others are from email crap...and I don't open anything I'm not expecting. Want to cut out 99.9% of the infections on your machine? Don't surf for porn or warez, don't use toolbars, and tell your friends nicely that if they are forwarding chain emails and other crap to you they will end up on your block list.

    There. Or here. Sometimes both.
AVG + ZoneAlarm (or Comodo) + Spybot S&D.

All free. There is no reason to pay for a consumer-level security product.

    Norton blows massively.

I will say that the new version of AVG is slightly more annoying and takes up more memory.

Mcafee (work provided), built in Windows Defender and firewall. I've never had a single issue.

Also, +1 to what readymix said. Surf smartly and you'll never have an issue.

I've used NOD32 and I felt that it worked wonderfully. Then again, I was not doing anything that would potentially harm my system, so I guess I never really tried it out to its fullest.

Only issue I've ever encountered with the corporate version of SAV is having to reinstall it due to not updating the virus definitions(maybe only a handful of times). Other than that, it works great.

Kaspersky here. It uses around 1/3 the resources of Norton or Symantec. I've used both for years and years, always getting frustrated. Switched to Kaspersky and love every minute of it. Minimal to no system slowdown, and does a good job.

I'd gotten so frustrated with Norton and Symantec that I went for about a year and a half without a virus scanner. When I put one back on, the machine was still clean. Amazing what happens when you don't go shoving your machine into cheap whores :)

Hardware firewalls > *. There is absolutely no reason to clutter your computer with useless crap. But if you must, I have heard good things about nod32.

I've used both Norton and McAfee with good results. I have access to corporate versions of both and am currently running McAfee on this machine. I also run AdAware regularly and have not had a virus since I stopped using Kazaa in 2003. At that time I only got one virus and that was without an anti-virus.

I'm with Readymix. The only reasons I have McAfee on this machine is that if I want to connect to the work LAN I have to have the work AV installed. I use AdAware for when I'm forced to use IE to hit some work-related sites. FWIW AdAware has never found ANYTHING when I use Firefox. It only finds cookies from IE.
