Yeah, I said it....and here's proof: "Costa Rican "artist" Guillermo Habacuc Vargas took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery and starved him to death as part of an art display. For several days the artist and visitors of the gallery watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died. Not one visitor of the gallery did anything to help the poor dog... More info can be found at http://www.theginblog.com/2007...abuse/ (Warning- Graphic Pictures) UNBELIEVABLY the Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the 'installation' was actually art and he has been invited to repeat his action for the biennial of 2008!!!
Not as big of idiots as theater people and actors. Look at how retarded Hollywood is. But yeah, thats pretty ridiculous. How much talent does that take? none...
I am having a hard time imagining the mindset of one of the folks standing there watching the dog die. On the other hand... if it were a pig, would it have quite the same impact as a dog does?
Hey . . . . . . there's more than that down there! seriously though, wouldn't it more of an impact if he starved himself instead of a dog???? let the bastard die, it's art.:laugh:
It would be my dream to quit my job and devote every last minute of my life making people like this suffer a slow, miserable death.
im an artist. and will be depending upon my creativity to make a living soon. all im good at is art so i kinda take a little offense to your main point. hes only one "artist" so dont be so quick to let your anger rule your ability to reason. i wouldnt even argue that as being art in any way. he didnt do anything but display a dying animal. whatever he was trying to do he didnt even express. he shouldnt be called an artist. it call him a shock jock if anything. i know what it takes to be a real artist and they are in no way stupid people. sometimes a little exentric but not ideots for the most part. Ansel Adams could possibly be one of my favorite artists and obviously look at Leonardo Da Vinci very smart people who created amazing works of art. my 2 copper lincolns worth
Some artists are idiots there i changed it for you. while the act of killing that dog is obviously ****ed up and debatable as art look at the message he is trying to convey. heres what i see: when it comes down to it there is a web frenzie about a stray dog that died- and people are getting all worked up about it. -yet all around the world people are dying of war, starvation, disease, ethnic cleansing. are we no different than the artist himself? we fail to help other humans and straight up ignore it- just like the artist and bystanders. -Did he really kill the dog so much as not coming to its aid-if someone was really bothered they would have stepped up and saved the dog-pherhaps that was what the artist wanted- do you kill a stray dog by not feeding it, i'm sure you see one once and a while? do you kill starving people third world people by not helping them? -how about bums in mpls, i bet you drive by one every day, they could be viewed as the dog-tied to mpls not having the money or skills to live on there own or leave, are you killing them by not helping them? - according to this reporthttp://www.actionagainstpoisoning.com/page111/reportR.Smithstraydog.html the average age of a stray dog in Zimbabwe is 4.5 years and in harsher climates (ie mn, romania) could be as low as 2-3.5 years. so yea it would have died soon, probably of starvation and desease-but we wouldn't care or see it. he is bringing it infront of us and all the sudden your outraged? why because you can't ignore it now? fact: it would have died just as cruel or worse death but you wouldn't know or give a **** because you don't have to see it. You can see allot of interesting observations on society while observing this, The bottom line is a stray dog died, big deal, humans are dying in much worse conditions and most of you don't give a ****-because you don't see it or choose to ignore whats going on around the world. NOW I'M NOT STANDING UP FOR THE ARTIST, OBVIOUSLY WHAT HE DID IS ****ED UP BUT LOOK INTO SITUATIONS MORE CRITICALLY AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE MESSAGE TRYING TO BE CONVEYED. MY POINT: I see allot of hypocritical statements like "oh **** him i would so save that dog and kick the artists ass" Are you saving the street girl starving in our city and kicking her dads ass for abusing her? Are you saving the war vet who's ****ed up from battles long gone and delusional on the street, and kicking our governments ass for abandoning him? NO, your not.... fyi: yes i'm an artist-graduating with a transportation deisgn degree(designing cars and bikes) but i do furniture design, painting, sculpture etc. an no i'm not high or drunk
i totally understand the above. although i do not think it is art to actually go ahead and leave a dog alone to die infront of everyone. yeah the idea behind it is thinking criticly of our human ability to act like we stand for so much but in the end we dont do anything about it. if he had really wanted someone to step up, it would be totally backwards from his origional idea that no one will. there is another untied link between the fact that he is saying "why wont anyone save the dog" when he himself went out grabbed the dog and put it on display. its like the stuck up roomate who looks at the mess in the room, bitches about it, but wouldnt ever do it himself. this so called artist isnt standing up to his own ideals. and im also just confused on how its art..... yes there is an idea but thats all i can see. he is getting a point across but he only displayed a live dog dying.... where is the creativity, he doesnt have a real media and medium. he only created with the entire thing was shock. i could walk up and shoot someone in the face. call it art in my defence in court and say i was trying to display murder and how it happens all around us. thats not art. at least not to me. this thread wont go anywere if this turns into a huge "what is art really" conversation because thats grey but there are still things that cannot be strongly argued as true art until there is a large movement behind it. like modern, gothic, abstraction, realism, Neo-expressionism...and so on. my real reason for saying anything in the first place was just the idea that this was some proof that artists are idiots... im done
/\ oh yea, personally i wouldn't consider it art...but defining art is a whole other topic. and yes i think hes and idiot too he could have gotten his point across in other ways than killing a dog
He can do what he wants, I don't like it and don't get it. But my question would be could you lump this in with "Modern/Contemporary Art". My wife has an art degree and likes going to the museums and art galleries, but I am BANNED from all "Modern S**T" Galleries ever since my raging outburst at the The Art Institute of Chicago. I yelled at several people who liked the crap they had in the modern crap section. I mean if i could go home and do the exact same thing IT IS NOT ART. That was one way to get out of going to the Walker museum ever. If I ever have to see something as dumb as "Red Plank" again I will flip out and start yelling at people again. I mean what in your right mind makes you think of this crap as art. Example 1 Example 2 Example 3
But just think how many puppies you'd kill then! Especially when you consider that South America isn't even technically orbiting anything. You'd have to nuke the earth to blow it out of orbit! OOH!
It was a joke. I don't want to truely nuke S.A. from orbit. And why don't we take the critical thinking a step further, shall we? -Are we any different for not saving the girl downtown that gets beat and abused by someone? A: YES, we are different, because unlike Mr. "Artist", we didn't go searching for this girl, and instead of saving them, tie them up and beat them in front of a bunch of "art lovers" -What about the millions of people dying of starvation in Africa, we just let them die. A: You cannot help everyone. Zimbabwe is a fine example, the ruling party's thugs steal food rations. Mugabe is a retard and his supporters are goons. Some places, like Zimbabwe, don't respond to diplomacy well either, as much as we'd like to think it is the American Way, we can't go to war with every despot. And that unfortunately would be the only way to dethrone Mugabe and feed his people. And regardless, while we may not be actively sending steak dinners to 4.5million starving people, we definately aren't parading them around in an art museum while starving them to death. There is a huge difference between inaction and downright abuse. You want to make a statement about feeding those who can't feed themselves? Try finding the same stray dog on the street, and then feed them and providing proper medical treatment, and let people see what happens when you care for something that you've gone out of your way to find. I honestly doubt that if we could find every person starving on this earth personally, that we wouldn't do what we could to feed them. If this artist was trying to prove a point, or make people think critically, it failed. Because a critical thinking person would have helped the dog, or kicked the 'artist's' teeth in for this. And yeah, I know people are dying in worse conditions else where, but I AM helpless to do anything about it. I can't drop everything and go to Zimbabwe to fix their issues, or fly to Tibet and stop protesters from dying, or whatever other horrible crap is going on. Just like I was helpless to stop this person from tying a starving dog up, and putting it on display while letting it continue to starve. That's right, I'm not, because I don't come across it. If I came across it, I'd do what I could. Same thing with the starving dog. How many thousands of people walked past that starving dog and did nothing? They were THERE. They did NOTHING. If I knew where it was happening, hell yeah I'd beat some girl abusing father's ass and buy her a Subway sandwich or something. But I don't, and I'm not going to go knocking on every door in Minnesota asking about it because I don't have time. It isn't hypocritical, it is just common sense. The difference between the dog starving and the girl getting beat is that someone decided they wanted to call one of those things "art" and put it on display. That is how we know exactly what happened and exactly who did it. I don't know of any starving girls getting beat by her dad, but point me in the direction and I'll take a tire iron to his face or at the very least call the authorities. I only know of one man starving dogs to death for personal gain and some sort of pompous, self righteous, "art" display, and trust me, if he wasn't some 6000miles away, I'd hop on over to the exhibit and let him know what I thought of his "art" and probably bring a fresh half pound of ground beef for the dog to chow on.
Jason, I knew you were joking. I just really wanted to use some quick photoshop skillz before I left for work. I also thought Puppemon was quite clever.
But he can't make that kind of decision. He's just a grunt. No offense. Crap like this is why I really don't support the NEA. They sponsor crap like crucifix in jar of piss, elephant dung on wall, and flag on the floor. And so what if artists starve? Am I entitled to taxpayer dollars to follow my dream of being an author even if I suck at it?
Yeah, there is a plethora of "Hey Look At Me" art that really takes no creativity or thought. OMG, If I pee or poop on it, I'm an artist!. That is pretty much alot of what gets the press these days. Pick a topic that will piss numerous people off, then pee or poop on it, and suddenly you have art. Sorry, you aren't deep, you are trying to get a rise out of people to sell junk. But, it makes me wonder what sort of living I could have if I spent all day ejaculating on pictures of Muhammad, Jesus and other religious figures and selling it off as "art." Maybe I could get a starving stray cat to wear a Jesus mask, and then face it towards mecca and break its front legs so it bows to mecca, then ejaculate on it while waving an upside down american flag! Oh man, I'm so clever and creative.
It will have to be an artists rendering, you pick the medium. I'll do it up, and it'll cost you 1,000. I'm busting out the pencils and sketchpad right now
I bet you could win an award for that! Better yet, just display a flagpole with a flag of the Islamic crescent flying above the U.S. flag. Sticking it to traditional values always makes an artist popular.
Ooh, I completely forgot. Although, I'd paint the Red white and blue in Red White and Green put the little symbol thing from the Mexican flag on it somewhere. That would get the Texas vote.
Ansel Adams could possibly be one of my favorite artists and obviously look at Leonardo Da Vinci very smart people who created amazing works of art. my 2 copper lincolns worth[/QUOTE] Ansel Adams pictures are pretty nice but is it art? he didn't create anything he simply captured an image. Photography is a skill no doubt but imo it does not constitute art.
There is something funny to this story, actually quite a bit lighter side. Something that will make all of you who made a "Screw this guy, Im gonna beat him up" post feel like idiots. The whole point of this art show was to prove that people are sheep. People were only concerned witht he problem when it was put on display, nobody bothered to mention it when the dogs were in the street. That is why the name of the exhibit, written in dog food on the wall, was "eres lo que lees" or you are what you read. I would like everyone to read these two webpages. http://209.85.135.104/translate_c?h...2007/octubre/05/noticias/revista/219438.shtml and http://thepetextraordinarium.blogspot.com/2008/03/starving-dog-exhibit-reported-as-hoax.html This just proves that people will jump behind a cause for absolutely no reason, and will actively do nothing other than blab about it. Think about the big picture people. This dog was actually given water and food! This was conceptual art used to show how people attach themselves to causes. If you jumped right in and made a negative remark you should all be ashamed of yourselves. The death of one dog means nothing when compared to the amount of human suffering in the world. Currently, 2.9 billion people are living on less than 2$ a day. 2.5 billion people live with inadequate or non-existent sanitation. Frankly, I don't give a crap about the death of one dog when thousands of people are starving to death. Did you know that we have enough food to feed 110% of the current population if it was all evenly distributed? But instead people are forced to suffer because of greed, and the lack of action. Take the lesson this artist was trying to teach us and apply it to your life. Go out and DO SOMETHING, quit sitting around and complaining about it on the internet. Edit: Thousands of people die each day from starvation, just wanted to make that clear.
I say well played by the artist / eye opener but wtf are you doing that you can stand in judgement of everyone else? I say you should get knocked off your high horse and take your own advice.pompous judgmental ass!
