Hey everybody. I'm gonna be replacing my front axle when it gets here in a couple days. So is disconnecting the strut from the spindle/hub the best way to pop the axle out? I haven't done an axle on a Subaru before so was wondering what my plan of attack should be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    That's always worked for me.

Big-ass* impact wrench to get the axle nut loose. Remove the roll-pin by the transmission. Mark your alignment on the camber bolt, then unbolt the strut from the spindle. Remove the axle from the transmission, then remove it from the hub. It might be hard to slide out of the hub. If the roll pin won't go back in when assembling, rotate the axle 180deg on the splines and try again.

    (* big-ass = ~900ft/lbs)

there are 2 bolts that go thru the bottom of the strut to the hub... usually it is the top one I think that has like an oblong shape to it.. that is your camber bolt.. if not sure.... mark both bolts and make not of which one came from which hole..

Should be the upper bolt. It has an extra washer on it and the bolt head has some little marks on it. I usually use a white paint pen to mark the angle on that bolt.

    here's an example.

Top one is camber, but I've heard it's easier to pull the ball joint outta the knuckle to do axles in the front.

Thanks a lot guys. This really helps. I'll have to see which would be easier when the axle comes :)

it is easier to pull the ball joint but if it it wont come out due to rust and you dont want to take a chance with the fork, pull it from the two bolts. My 2 cents.

i dont think its easier but everyone has their own way to go about things. when you pull the camber bolts its easier to get the alignment close to what it was, if you pull the ball joint you SHOULD get an alignment
