i "backfire" sometimes with my sr20det. in my case i'm just running rich on part of my fuel map and the unburnt fuel is igniting in my hot, cat-less exhaust

Backfiring and afterfiring are two differnt things that many people thing are the same thing.

Afterfiring happens when unburnt fuel hits a hot exhaust (cat, primarily) and is common on any car that runs rich when the throttle is chopped (SR20DE is a great example of that). More likely to occur with a free flowing exhaust too.

Backfiring is back through the intake, and is bad.

^ i thought this was reversed.

anyway what backfiring would be is when the detonation in the motor happens after is should and the intake valves have already opend. so the exhuast gases go up the intake maniold instead of out the exhuast.

i have had it happen a few times, its not pleasent whatching you boost gauge go positive at idle. i would follow it up with some sea foam action.
