There's a lot of force behind a car at 100mph. I saw a pick of a Skyline wrapped around a tree some time back where the car was basically cut in half. That car was apparently only doing something in the range of 30-40mph, not real fast by most people's standards. Trees + cars = Bad mojo. I'm actually suprised we don't see similar in WRC, but I guess full roll cages has a certain structural benifit that our daily drivers lack. Side impacts are probably the worst too, so little space and most of the crash testing/car design focuses mainly on the front end and some on the rear.

Downfall of sports cars? Nah. This kind of thing has been happening since the beginning of the automobile. Automobile racing in the olden days was basically suicide. If I can remember right, it was something like 1 in 3 race car drivers would die at some point in their race career. That was back in the days of open top cars and just a roll would do you in. Elimination of the sports car could never happen. People have a hard time resisting the urge to go fast.

No, I've seen both of those. The first one is an Audi A3 and the second one is an Escort Cosworth if I remember right. They were both over in Europe.

Nope they are real.. I even saw one in AUstralia where a kid in a little 13B turbo mazda RX3 lost control hit a tree and the rear half of the car was like 150 ft or more in another direction landed in a childrens playground...

Anyone who drives at high speeds should already have a healthy fear of high speeds.

seeing accidents like this is why you keep it on the track.

That portuguese a3 accident pic.. I saw the whole thing on a site. It was ridiculous how bad that car was smashed.

    EDIT: here's more on it:

    http://timeslips.bootnetworks.com/a3tree/

look at the speedo on the second page... 100kph at 2krpm, was in 5th gear going 60
