Hi, I need some help. I have a 2006 sti and slid into a curb hitting the drivers side rear wheel. I put it up on the hoist and the rear lateral link had a nice curve in it. I replaced it and the tire still leans out on the top, I'm thinking it is a bent strut but before I spend 450 on a strut from subaru I would like to know what other people think? i talked to a guy that said he did the same thing with a audi and it bent his under carrige and his car was totaled. what do you think? is there a way to test the strightness of a strut? thanks
Not really. I work for a body shop and sometimes with hits like that we will first fix what's seen by the naked eye. Then we will send it to the alignment rack and if they cant align the suspension correctly then they can usually tell you what's bent and needs replacing. Thats all I can tell ya...
check the strut, trailing arm and any other suspension item.. its rare but even the hub/knuckle can be bent.. yes I know its cast but I have seen em bent on an F350 so if those bend subaru crap will
Welcome to the forum by the way! You could borrow or just get a shot strut from someone and throw it on there and see if that does it.
Check the strut over thoroughly, and compare to the other side for reference. You are not going to bend the unitbody in this instance. Next in line is the rear crossmember, and that is a substantial piece. How it is mounted makes it pretty difficult cause a problem with the unitbody..
well, won some struts on ebay I will give that a try and hope I don't have to replace the knuckle. thanks for the help
How about you have someone who knows what they are doing look at the car instead of throwing parts at it?
+1 I see this all the time at the shop I work at. Take it to a qualified repair shop and have it looked at. If you hit it hard enough to bend parts, you may have tweaked the mount areas of those parts as well. It is also very common to damage the wheel bearing by hitting a curb. btw- we may have been able to straighten the trailing arm
