OK, I got a brand new problem that I have not suffered from before. When I turn on the engine on my 1.8L FWD, I can hear some ticking...which i found out to be my pully, the one in the middle to be shaking back and forth, of course when the car is moving u can't hear it because now the belt is turning fast enogh that is stays in place...Also when I first ran my car yesterday morning, it was not running right..I would press the pedles and it won't go fast enogh, it's like I had to floor it in order for it to go...Any idea's...PLEASE HELP...

If your main crank pulley is that loose you should be able to wiggle it with the engine off. Can you do this?

If the crank pulley is that loose it will throw off your engine cam timing and make it run poor.

Is it the main crank pulley, or your alternator?

I know that the stock main crank pulley has some rubber shock absorbtion built in, I've seen pics of them after they've broken apart. http://www.ryanmacdonald.com/car/howto/pulley/pulley.html

Anyway, either one shouldn't be too hard to change.

The crank pulley never spins evenly at idle. The stock crank pulley's nut wiggles at idle but the pulley itself doesn't. A lot of the time, people who replace their pulley with a lightweight one thinks it was from a bad installation, but it itsn't. It just easier to notice after a pulley change.

Secondly, my old RS made a ticking sound from the engine when I first start up. It was much louder when it got really cold. I had it taken to the dealer for that stuff, but I forgot why they didn't fix it under warranty.

Power loss? Turbo that *****! Mo, the best way to get that fixed it to take it to a mechanic. There are too many variables that can affect a car's acceleration. What you can do is check all of the air, fuel, and spark related parts before you find a mechanic.

you should try to re torque the crank pulley. my dads legacy had the pulley come off while driving. luckily the only serious thing it drives ius the alt.

both my stock one and my UR one wobble at idle.

this could be potentially bad. i know when the pulley cam off my dads it sheered the 1/2 moon pin off. although that isnt very difficult to replace it is $$ & time.

secondly, this an extremecase. we used to have a subie that was in an accident and after a while the crank would wobble and make nioses. breoiught it to the dealership. it had a bent crankshaft. so came home w/ a new leggy.

good luck and keep us informed.

That's why I asked to grab and wiggle it. If it really is loose you'll know.

I use a Mechanic's Stethiscope (aka: needle stethiscope) to track down noises under the hood.

my 2.2 crank pulley came loose when on the highway and I took it to a mechanic. He tightened the bolt but not enough. Turns out the key was worn down. The next mechanic I took it to put some loctite on the key and the main bolt and tightened it properly (cranked the heck out of it) and I've never had a problem since.

incorrect, how would it make it run poorly? it doesnt move the gears around, and its not a harmonic balacer..look at nasioc, MO check your oil, chances are the noise you are hearing is probably piston slap, its common on 1.8s at all 2.5s but its not terrible if its happening, as long as it goes away when it warms up it will be fine

does not go away when I warm it up, but when the car start to go then it goes away. It's hard to explain, but when I am in first or trying to take off from a complete stop it struggles to go, by means it just take time to go, now I am thinking that this is basically the belt and that loos pully, when I get some speed going I know that the belt now is holding on well to the pully..so it runs smothly after I get over like 3000rpm of 2nd gear, I can't tell u the speed becasue my dam thing does not work...

I don't know.. it just didn't seem that bad when fuji and I drove it at firestone. It was a little doggy, but not terrible for a 1.8. I didn't hear any knocking sounds when it was warm. The wobbling pulley didn't look good though...
