First of all I would like as much information as you guys can give me. anything ideas and info form past experiances to being a full mechanic helps. Finaly took the car in and there was 0 comprresion on cylinder 3 and 136 in cylinder 1,2,4. So there was bigg damge to the piston(s). Iam getting a new 2.5l shortblock. this is were the i need help. waht would people recomend for gasket's OEM of some sort or cosmetic one's. what are the benifits, should I wate and install all my mods at the same time that i put in the block or breack it in for a period of time than install (kind of in a money cruch so dont have everything yet), will my AP compesate enoguh to safely drive until i get a good tune.when people talk about getting new heads, do they mean head studs or headers? will i need them? Thats all i can think of rigt now. any response will nice. and yes i have looked on Nasioc for a lot of stuff but it would be nive to hear from some local guys. PS: add other crap in this if you feel i should know or should do. THANKS!
Heads = cylinder heads. Shortblock = the assembled rotating assembly (block, crank, rods, pistons) Longblock = shortblock + cylinder heads What do the pistons look like? How do you know there is big damage to them? Who is doing the work for you? Figuring out what caused the 0 compression is important to decide what you need to do. If you are set on going with a 2.5 shortblock I STONGLY recommend having your heads rebuilt. You have an '02 with hight mileage right? You will want some new exhaust valves for sure. They are prone to failure and you don't want to have to pull the motor twice.
ok good advice to know. yeah i have high milage on the car now. Iam haveing a mechanic that has done work on previous cars of mine before. good guy. No quiet sure on how the cylinders look at this point but iam set on getting a 2.5l since its around 1600 to take the engine apart and that dosent include parts and instalation. would you recomend stock heads or some type of aftermarket? any advicse for gaskets?
one piece of gasket advice, the company is called "cometic" they're not "cosmetic" you can use OEM head gaskets too. At your level of expertise on this subject you might want to just leave things in the hands of an experienced subaru engine builder If the guy rebuilding your engine cant answer these questions, find another guy who can to rebuild it.
Oh yeah might want to clear that up. the guy was just looking at it to find out what was wrong. I plan on having some one with experiance in Subaru's to build the motor. and wasnt quiet sure on how to spell that haha (cometic) sorry....
will stock gaskets give a higher compression on this block or lower? higher comp= more low end right? or is it the other way around....
Yes running a 257 block with 207 heads and STi gaskets IIRC yeilds 8.7 CR. You should ring Ron at Axis and get the cometic headgaskets for the hybrid that he stocks. These will lower the compression to 8.0. And you are correct the higher compression would yeild more torque but you wouldn't be able to run the desired timming or boost with the higher compression.
Could be just a blown exhaust valve. Thats what happened to me, 0 compression in cyl 1 do to it; Did he do a leak down test also? Or just compression? A leak down can give you a few more answers as to where the problem may be.
No he did just the compression test. iam asking him to do a leack down test as well. thanks for the help guys. Edit: whats Rons number or is he on the Axis website?
hey how much would it be to get new wrx heads? any one know a good place to get some... or could i bore them out? how much/and who does that service? thanks
bore out heads? I don't know about all that. New heads from the dealer are pricey too. Call MTKA parts or PM AWDImprezaL about the price. 20% discount
Got another question, if i were to get new exhaust vavles for the swap would i get ones that fit 2.5l or 2.0l? and is it ok to get OEM or go for soemthing after market/bigger?
