Come on people! You should be pretty damn excited about this. If I could have gotten one of these when I bought my turbo, it would have made life a lot easier.
Yeah everyone of you STI owners get excited and swap out your VF39. BTW looking for stock VF39 for my little 2.0
they have been working on those for 2 years. try buying one and they say, "we will have the first units available in 2 or 3 three weeks."
So the whole point of this kit is that you can use it with stock everything? No modifications to exhaust system?
No bullets here sir. you can use the stock set-up and pretty much drop this one in where the vf39 was
So this is just a drop in for stock - no additional parts installation, expense needed. you could use stock ems - correct? So another way to ask this question - what would you have to do before? Thanks!
You should've looked harder. Both Blouch (Dom 3.0R) and Element Tuning (GT52) have been making gt30r hybrid turbos for quite some time. Unless I'm missing something here, the ATP turbo is basically the same as the other two for the most part -- Garret compressor and CHRA stuffed into a housing that is a direct Subie bolt-on. IMHO, if you are going to jump to to something in the GT30 ballpark, just get a real one and don't bother with an internally gated hybrid. Otherwise just get a tried and true FP Green or SZ49.
I agree with everything W.O.T. said about just getting an fp green or similar. Tried and true, and WHEN (not if) you get tuned, the tuner will have a better ballpark from which to tune from.
I dunno, I like the GT series compressors. Dealt with them a few times on friends' cars, and they're great snails. I'd do one of these if I got the chance. I don't wanna go crazy and go rotated mount.
Well the thing is with the hybrid gt30r based snails, the overall gains aren't that much more than either the sz49 or the fp green -- and both of those turbos will outspool the hybrids. Back when I was considering doing a turbo upgrade, I was really looking into one of those hybrids but after looking at a ton of dyno graphs, I decided that a green was the way to go.
You would still need larger injectors, a decent exhaust and a tune. There really is no modification that should be without a tune, IMHO, except for an axel-back maybe. From that plot it looks like the 3071r spools just like stock on an STi, with a lot more flow capability. Anything larger like a 3076R and up yes, I'd go with an external gate and a larger turbine housing. 400/400 is pretty damn good with jsut the turbo, downpipe, and tuning. Stock IC, stock mid-pipe and axel back, ect.
I highly doubt that graph was a totally stock STi with just the downpipe and turbo swapped out. The stock 550 (or whatever they are) injectors simply aren't large enough to support 400whp. I will agree that the torque curve is damn sexy. Further proof that the people saying larger garret turbos are laggy, lol.
Either way it's nice to have options. I guess I didn't see it before, what dyno shows a stock sti at 245? That's high, isn't it? are they usually 210-225? So the 400/400 inflated?
Looks like those pulls were on a dynojet. Those things read obscenely high when compared to either a Mustang or a DD.
They said they added more fuel, which I take as larger injectors since the stockers obviously cannot supprt 400/400 at the wheels. Do you mean Garretts are laggy? The plot shows anything but. If I had a newer gen car and was looking for a turbo this would be a serious consideration. I couldn't be happier with the 3071R on my 2.2. I've ridden in a couple 2.5L 20g cars and haven't been super impressed with the response. As far as the other people who have done hybrids, I'd be skeptical. ATP has been in bed with Garret for a long time and I'd trust their housing over anyone else's. There's a reason they took so long to bring it to market. Proper engineering is a slow process. In the automotive aftermarket, we see both ends of it.
No, not at all. It's yet further proof to shut up the naysayers who think that something like a gt35r doesn't do anything below 5k.
Ahh yes, de ragu festivul. When it gets warm out and I get back up to firestone, I'll have to give some rides. I'm running pretty much the same thing(GT3071R), even with the same .86 exhaust housing. The response is nice, even with my less than ideal uppipe, which has a decent amount of drop-through on my welds. If I had Grimm PnP & coat my exhaust manifold and if I cleaned up my welds, I'm sure my spool-up would be significantly better. Even still, this flows enough air at my wastegate pressure of 13.8psi to surprise a lot of people. I wish Garrett would hook up with Borg-Warner. Garrett has the hot side figured out and it seems BW has put much time and money into the compressor side of things. Or Garret could pony up and do it themselves. Or they could just come out with a dedicated VNT turbo to gas use. I can't wait to see what Derek does with his VNT GT3782, and how well it holds up. Apparently it makes 15psi at 3k on a 2.0 wrx. :eek3:
