Hey i'm going to be putting new brakes and rotors on and i've never done any brake work before. My friend put new pads and rotors on his honda but they are obviously a little different. I'm not sure if there are any potential problems i'll run into? What happens if the rotor is seized up? Have any of you put them on yourselves before? Are there any writeups online? Its an 04 STi. I would have them professionally done but i'm pretty much broke right now so i'm gunna tackle it myself. Any suggestions/hints?
alright, we are actually going to try it on friday but if we run into any problems i'll let you know saturday. Thanks
Scoobymods seems to be down right now, but they have some writeups on there how to do it. It really does seem pretty easy, the only bitch looks like bleeding the brakes when you are done.
what are you doing when you refer to "Changing brakes"? this will vary your level of difficulty. Changing pads? Calipers? Rotors? Lines?
Rotors and Lines aren't bad by any means. As nightracerwrx said, the bitch is just bleeding the brakes. Try finding a service manual or someone who has one for your car as that makes life a lot easier if you get stuck
how.. just cause it has 2 bleeders??? not too hard... especially when you have a power bleeder... ha ha
bleeding brake on a sti is a pain but the most important thing is not to get any air in the master cylinder. Make sure you have the corrent sequence on bleeding the brakes.
no, but even without a full bleeding machine all you need is a buddy and a wrench, if you get air in the master you SHOULD NOT be working on brakes.. it isnt rocket science... dont run it empty while bleeding... bleed 1 corner then top off.... Fortunate or dumb.. havent quite worked that out yet.... ha ha...
straight forward... STi right?? Just watch the pins, dont bend them, use good brake grease, grease the slides, yada yada.. you dont need to bleed them when you do pads... its good too but not necessary....
if I remember correctly there are pins that hold the brake pads in place... you slide them out and back in.. they go through the pads.. well on the rears I know, sure the fronts are the same... You turning the rotors???? I would....
the front left rotor is destroyed but the others are in good shape. 3 outta 4 prob wont sell though.
Maybe, but I wouldn't think so. I would have to say this would be a good time to have a trained eye look at it. It would be a bummer to make a mistake and replace parts that aren't needed...or even worse, not fixing a potentially bigger issue.
oh i guess its not destroyed, just poor maintinence on my part. I needed new pads a while ago and the front left pad is so warn down that the little silver clip is digging into the rotor. it was just laziness on my part but i already had the new rotors(cross drilled) so i'm not too woried about it.
well we got the front set put on tonight and they look sexy . we kinda ran outta time so were gunna do the rears tomorrow night. Didnt run into too many problems, just alot of tricky knobs and rods. I'll post some pics of the full set tomorrow night!
you should be able to take the rear caliper off and then just remove the rotor. Takes me about 10 mins to change a rear rotor and that's including the time to jack up the car and remove the wheel. Shouldn't be touching the suspension linkage at all.
cool thanks but we just compressed the pistons on the fronts with a few c clams so i think we'll be alright
