I know there are a few Subaru techs around here, so I was hoping one of them could hop in here...or anyone really. My brake lights had not been working sporadically and I figured out (I thought) that it was my break light "trigger" that was getting stuck...you know, the little button that comes out when you step on the brake pedal? I would fiddle with that and then the lights would work again.

Well, today my brake lights stopped working again and I did that same fiddling and the trigger isn't getting stuck anymore but the lights still aren't working. I'm wondering if the whole electronic unit might have gone bad. Is that a common problem? Cheap fix? Anything else I should check?

Just made an apt online at Minnetonka Subaru for tomorrow, but was wondering if there's anything anyone thought I could fiddle with today to try and fix it? Fuses are all good, it's not the bulbs, and it doesn't matter how hard I press the brake pedal...the lights don't come on. Sometimes, if I press on the brake pedal and let it go quickly so it snaps back, the lights will flicker...so the electronic sending unit isn't completely kapoot.

should be a cheap fix, just replace the brake switch by the pedal, you can't really fix them since they simply wear out

I'm hoping it's covered under warranty since I'm under 60K...seems like it shouldn't wear out that fast though. I scheduled an apt for tomorrow afternoon at Morries Minnetonka so hopefully this will get resolved.

hahah..had the same problem here just a few weeks ago, and it seems to be pretty well known for subarus.

step 1: have someone or a stick to press the brake pedal
step 2: open trunk, take out bulb (keep it plugged in)
step 3: fiddle with it or just move the bulb base around or fiddle the bulb around wearing rubber gloves.

if it works, then it works!
if it doesnt, it is probably the negative/grounding cable.
