My lug key just broke off while I was trying to remove a lug nut. I already picked up a replacement key but I was wondering if anyone had some advice as to how to remove the remaining piece. I have already tried heating it with a torch and also grabbing it with a vice grip and just yanking and twisting. Most likely I am just going to drill it out but figured I would check for any advice before doing that. Here is a pic of how it looks.
i just wish i could find that thread about the guy cutting the wheel in half, just to show what NOT to do. the vice grip is what i would try, and now i assume they are aluminum if they busted like that. maybe someone could weld an aluminum bar onto it for you so you could at least grab the bar and turn.
grab an impact socket that is pretty snug.. hammer it on and use an impact on it... had to do it often when working as a technician.... if you havent already tried and F****ed it up.. bring it to my house and I will try tomorrow.. I am home all day.. bit of a drive though
there are sockets u can buy (usually from a parts guy, snapon, cornwell, ect) with a reverse thread on the inside made to remove locking lugs and stripped lugs... Sometimes parts stores carry them too. They are made to remove things like that. If u cant find them try a tire store, and ask if any of the mechanics have a set and if they would be willing to help u out... I've never come across a stripped/locking lug i havent been able to get off... And if u have to resort to a torch, theres a little trick u can do too. If u smear lots of anti-seiz all over the wheel around the lug u can literally melt it out of there, with little to no damage to the wheel... Hope this helps
I didnt want to wait and they were cheap rims so we went the route of an air hammer. It wasnt quite as bad as that wheel that was cut off but it is unusable again and I honestly dont care too much. Didnt have all day to try options and I tend to get fed up with mechanic work quickly and start breaking stuff.
