Just found this article. Not a ton of info, but enough to start the drool! http://m.autoblog.com/2013/08/04/subaru-brz-sti-teasers-coming-soon/
why does it need a turbo? i keep hearing this nonsense and cant figure out why it keeps being said. It makes a much better rwd sports car to have linear power throughout the rev range.
Power aside, I think I'd be very pleased seeing a set of BBS wheels, Brembos, and less of the large amount of wheel gap that the current BRZ has.
If they can get 250hp for the sti version then i'll wait for it(if it will come out 2014) instead of getting the 09-11 stis.
http://jalopnik.com/the-leaked-subaru-brz-sti-probably-isnt-the-real-s-1030254979 "UPDATE: Subaru has confirmed that the STi that was teased last night if just a tuned tS, not a full bore STi." And that's that.
Have any of you driven an BRZ? I drove one and the first thing I thought was...where's the power? Ok, don't get your undies in a bunch, I know that's not the idea of the BRZ. But some of us would like a fun, reasonably cheap, and higher power two door, rwd coupe. I would be willing to pay reasonably more for a BRZ STI with a turbo that has more power and flexibility for easily adding more power by going stage 2, etc. Road and Track had an interesting article this month about a used Porsche Boxster vs. a new BRZ. Guess which one "won" in their eyes? The boxster, partially because of moar powa. Anyway, before I get the banhammer for talking about turbos (wait, how about an H6?), I'm very excited to see what the new BRZ STI really offers. It's very possible that another 50 hp is all the car needs to really take it to the next level! (linear power is pretty great too).
Its still 200hp and 2600 lbs, thats a much better power to weight ratio than the miata ever was. Its not a slow car, its a fun car.
Let's not forget this car was an update of the AE86. RWD, underpowered, cult following regardless. They designed the car with overall balance in mind not power. Sorry boys, the only turbo I see happening is aftermarket. I think people are taking things out of context here. Can you put a turbo on it? Sure. You can also put a turbo on a Honda odyssey. The point is this car had a purpose in mind and its fulfilled it quite well. Even if its under powered.
Right, which is why I didn't buy one and also I'm assuming why you didn't buy a brz either (and got the car that you did). I still like the idea of the BRZ, I just wanted more power. And more power is not always the answer...damn little brz beat me in autox once!
I read somewhere earlier today that this was going to be limited to around 750 vehicles. I can't recall the article.
I just Googled it, first link. http://autoblog.com/2013/08/05/subaru-brz-sti-teased-really-only-ts-version/
Better info hear then in any of the previous links: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43358 I always knew the "STi" would be NA. It only makes sense. The tS is suppose to stand for "tuned by STi" aslo all the info released is about a Japanese version. So, again we wait.
Wow $41K? Okay, I'll be that guy for now. If it were to be sold in the US, why not save some money and just do similar mods (suspension, seats, wheels, brakes, etc) for less? It's like the typical build a WRX vs buy an STi argument.
turbo kits for these cars have been out for a while and the FA20 motors make crazy good power they are STOUT!!!
The balance is awesome. The handling and steering are amazing! The brakes are fantastic and it shifts like buttah. High revs are a definite win also. And on top of it all it's looks drop dead gorgeous(especially in the pearl white). Aside from all of that, i could definitely see a 30-80hp increase being a welcomed addition. I'd rather see it from something other than a turbo tho. But i'd still like to see it/drive it/own it/make love to it, etc. It did feel a little underpowered. But EVERYTHING else was bang on for me! It's an awesome car.
There is some error in the price conversion. That is based on straight exchange rates, and doesn't factor in any pricing variations between what the normal BRZ pricing is in Japan vs. US. I believe the pricing of the BRZ in Japan is higher than it is in the US when you just compare the MSRP vs Exchange rates. I honestly couldn't see this being a $13-16k+ price point variance on the USDM Market based on the 41k conversion price and MSRP for a base model(When or if they bring anything else over).
That makes more sense. They made a very limited, JDM-only "tS" version of the 5th gen legacy which was essentially better suspension, exhaust and some body pieces. I thought it was pointless for a 5th gen LGT. Their big selling point was inverted bilsteins and a "flexible strut tower brace" . A Spec.B it was not. I can see where it might make some sense for a BRZ though. People just need to get used to the fact that tS != STi as they know it.
After driving one, I see no specific need for a turbo on this car. It's pretty good as is, and I say this owning a turboed car. I drive a Civic Si, and my foot's to the floor a LOT of the time, even cornering. I drive a BRZ, and I rarely have the gas pegged. Now there's already an aftermarket for anyone wanting to turbo these cars. There's little need or want from Subaru to offer a factory, warrantied product for this car. It wasn't developed for it, nor will Subaru smartly support it. The STI badge on the car was never going to be turboed. The STI version was mentioned forever ago and was forever ago mentioned that it was never going to be turbocharged. This is not new news at all. It's quite old news really, over half a year old, more than that.
If its not turbo charged, then I see no reason to sell it... The changes made to the sti or ts version would look to be nothing that couldnt be done to the regular brz...price and difference between them will be a huge factor....there has always been a pretty good difference separating the sti versions, these would seem too close to throw an sti badge on it and call it tuned.
Turbo may increase potential for ringland failure!!! Just what I'm looking for in my performance automobile!!!
I think the easiest way to see this is to take the car off of the street and bring it to a track. Power and drivability become very clear when you have limits that you are trying to push. Plumber and RexNEffect were nice enough to show me the difference between power and drivability at our first BIR event.
AE86, I don't know a lot of facts but I don't think it was a 26k cost equivalent either. It's within $200 of the base WRX price today, which is not a cheap car. Seems with the newer turbo setups it could be more powerful and still smooth. Trolling a little here but even the injector seal issues I see on the ft86 forums seem a bad sign. Granted any "tracked" car will (maybe should) void warranty but it doesn't seem to hold up. I cannot tell what Subaru is doing anymore. Are the good times over?
Stop being so melodramatic. Subarus have had problems with all sorts of things for a number of years. The first run of the WRX in the US had fuel line issues with a recall. You're driving a mass produced econo-box, expect an occasional problem to arise. The BRZ is an enthusiast driver's car, it is priced accordingly.
I have been waiting for the new WRX and the rumors about no wagon are making me dramatic. My 02 WRX burnt valve failure at 75k was blamed on "cheap gas." I promise to get therapy and forgive and forget.
Yes, they are, sell your car as soon as you can, all because a non awd non turbocharged Subaru exists.
