So i'm desperately looking around for a subaru to trade my sentra se-r for and i found a 2002 bugeye wagon wrx with 98,000 miles. Its a dealer and the title and history is clean. he's asking $6850 for it. I'm just curious as to how reliable these engines/transmissions are. My sentra has 56,000 miles on it and i dont want to make the mistake of going to something i really want and then it breaking down on me. If anyone has any info on reliabilty that would be great. Thanks.

What is wrong with the car? That is very cheap for a WRX with under 100k unless its a POS, or salvage title....

    What is the dealers name?

I'll swing by and tell you if it has been painted. I'm in Shak town, so its not out of the way.

98k is coming up on some good maintenance. Timing belt, valve adjustment, etc. Bring those things up and you might take it home for a decent amount less.

Otherwise looks pretty legit! Maint costs could help ya wiggle the price down a bit, but it looks like a good deal

    good luck!

Actually, that's about the going rate for a bugeye right now. It's almost 10 years old with almost 100k on it. Bugeyes are not worth 10k anymore, unless you've got one with absurdly low miles and even then you're pushing it.

Some of us have been running modified bugeyes for years and haven't had engine or transmission issues. If you keep up on the maintenances and aren't launching the car they hold up pretty well for the average person.

That is a very good price. I paid 8k for mine this past august and it had like 110k just leave it STOCK and keep up on maintinace!! takes money to play and have power i already put a motor STi block and now after that 2 gear exploded so trans was my fault but the 100k and more power wasnt and all I had was a stage 2, stock boost etc...

I bought my 02 with 96k in Sept. had the timing belt done, upgraded gears, and stage 2 mods. paid 7k. It was in rough shape body wise (a small dent and scratches on all 4 corners). After I bought it I've replaced all the fluids, spark plugs, done the clutch, and replaced the radiator/hoses. So...you get what you pay for. If you buy a 7k wrx you should expect to do some maintenance and/or have some mechanical or body issues. I didn't like the look, but the 04/05 have the better tranny, so you might want to spend a little more and get one of those. The car is amazing though, I went from a Mazdaspeed Protege with lots of mods (which I loved) and its a HUGE upgrade.

Once again, it's all in how you drive. There are people running around with higher powered WRXs that have the 5MT and haven't blown them up. There are plenty of factors that go into transmission failures, the clutch and the driver are the two big ones. If you're slamming gears with a non-stock clutch then your odds of breaking gears are going to go up. When I was at the dealership, the broken gearsets were all due to abuse and it was pretty evident. Is the 5MT as good as the six speed? Nope. But it's not the glass box that some people try to make it out to be either.

Yup. Keep looking around, there are plenty of them out there. Is there a specific bodystyle (wagon vs sedan) or color that you're looking for? What kind of price range are you looking to be in? If you can find one that's been taken care of, get it checked out by one of the techs on the board and they can give you an idea of what it'll need. Keep up with your maintenances and take care of the car and you should be fine. If you're looking to modify it, there are plenty of resources both on here and on Nasioc. If you're thinking about doing a particular mod, odds are it's been done several times already on Nasioc. Search around on there and you'll find all the info you need.

i'm looking for a trade until i sell my car. so right around the 7k price range. i'm looking for a 90's 2.5rs or bugeye wrx's. i just want a solid car. i dont think i'm going to be doing any crazy mods anytime soon.
