My friend has a bugeye, and wants some .272 cams. B&C is out for a while, and he was recommended Crawfords. I recommended Delta. What is the best option for him?
    ej20
    high comp pistons
    forged rods
    monster FMIC
    wants a .272 duration.

I am also running the Crower 272's. Great cams, and a very aggressive sounding idle.

am i the only one who noticed he has high compression pistons? why would you have high comp pistons in a turbo car?

we offer a dual pattern cam for that application, larger intake profile for a monster "gulp" of air, not too big duration on exh. side or your boost will be blown out past the valves. $93.50 ea. for the sohc

    IIRC, some sort of 40R.

Hey Delta, I've been loving the regrinds in my EJ22T. I think I ended up with the "hotter" grind. Anything above 14.0:1 at idle and there is a nice lope. They really helped these heads out.

Seems like a little much for a VF34, the stock EJ20 internals would be more than capable of holding the power of a VF34. Mine ran fine for 2 years. And the 272's are awfully agressive for a VF34, is your friend sure that the turbo can supply enough air in the upper RPM range for a 272 duration cam? His whole setup just sounds excessive for what a VF34 will make.

maybe its a 39, i dont remeber, but its either a 34 or 39. He built everything himself, so im guessing hes smart enough to do a 39.
also, he is aiming for 22lbs

The VF39 has a smaller exhaust side I believe, can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure they both use the same compressor housing. Eitherway, 21lbs is max unless he is using some form of boost control. If he knows what he's doing, he might want to look into where those turbos are efficient and also where they will run out of steam during the rpm range. The VF39 on the STi typically doesn't hold 22lbs to redline, and the 272 cams on the 2.0L are going to be breathing alot more up top then they are in the mid range...meaning the turbo isn't going to be helping much up there.

this is why small turbos suck.... i agree with the mix's first statement on not needing cams for that car.

how about getting out of the vf group all together. if hes running a higher compression i would go with a 18g or a 20g if you only want to reach your 300 mark

I wouldn't even think of going under a 20g with a built 2.0 motor + hot cams. I'd say something like an FP Green + an 8000 - 8500 redline would fit the bill.

Yeah, no VF turbo is going to net you the power that your block is capable of. And I don't think any of the VF turbos are going to breathe enough to make power where your cams allow the power to be made.

20G would be an excellent choice. 30R would also be a nice choice.

i don't know about a 2.0L but i have a 2.5L with the crower 272's and a 20G and mine makes decent all around power.

you can run high compression pistons with a turbo. you just cant run crap for boost. you know that!

High compression in a forced induction motor is effectively chopping it off at the knees. Why put your cylinder pressures higher when they already are high from boost? This means you cannot run nearly the boost that you can with lower compression. The goal of forced induction is to put more air into the cylinders. High compression limits how much you can shove in there by detonation. All higher compression does for you give you better off boost drivability, at the sacrifice of ultimate power.

Direct injection allows you to run a higher compression, like the MazdaSpeeds at 9.5:1, because of the in cylinder cooling and stratified charge of the fuel. There is a reason that pretty much all forced induction cars use lower compression from the factory when compared to their naturally aspirated counterparts.;)

Obviously he knows something none of us do. Putting a VFXX turbo with 272 cams on a 2.0L motor with "high compression" is alot of work for not alot of return.

A turbo, that doesn't produce much airflow + engine internals made to take massive abuse + a compression ratio that chokes overall cylinder pressure + cams that allow tons of airflow at a place in the RPM range that the chosen turbo has effectively run out of air = fail. But props to him for being so knowledgeable. Whatever it is he is doing that you can't know yet, I can tell you that it makes no sense at all. There isn't anything left in the equation that would make the current known combination make any sense. It sounds like someone is just tossing parts at a car. But that is just me basing my opinion off of what you have said. Maybe it would be good for him to come on here and clear it up for us.

Because as it stands, the EJ20 at the stock 8:1 CR + VF34 or VF39 is a very well matched combination. The EJ20 can handle anything the VF34 or 39 can throw at it, as well as any VF series turbo for that matter. And the stock cams can handle any VF series turbo's airflow rates. So, it sounds to me like massive overkill for not alot of gains.
