I would worry more about what effects its going to have on your insurance rate. One stop sign violating jacked up my insurance rate 100$ more a month.

I think it is about $180 but my tickets usually have more offenses on there so every time I get a ticket it's about $350

It's always worth the time with something like this to go in a talk to a hearing officer. If nothing else, maybe you can get it suspended, so if you don't get caught doing anything stupid for a year it will go away.

What exactly were you doing? That can have a huge bearing on what a hearing officer will do for you. What is your driving record like?

^Exactly what you should do. As soon as one ticket gets on your record you're screwed from there on out. I just went to court for exhibition driving (back end slid out 3 feet goin around a corner) and I got a court appointed lawyer. Well I just got a letter in the mail and they're just gunna drop the case because it's not worth it.

I'd take it to court no matter what. While I was sitting in court I observed the judge take EVERY misdemeanor and bump it down to a petty misdemeanor and usually fine drops as well. Or you could try to work out a deal with the prosecutor ahead of time. They like doin that kinda thing.

    "fight it!
what were u doin, a careless driving ticket usually has loopholes"

WEEEELLL...I was going 100+ past an unmarked SUV in Golden Valley (394 at 100) in 2007ish. The police officer put on my ticket that I was going "at least 90 mph". I fought the ticket. Even though there was nothing written on the ticket at the time (the officer later testified). I was offered I could (a) do a jury trial or (b) plead guilty. A guilty plea was my choice as I was looking at INCREASED CHARGES of reckless driving among other charges. My guilty plea was initially $400.

In the end I asked the judge to lower the fine due to "financial hardship" which he did with the inclussion of ONE YEAR probation with ONE MONTH! in the workhouse if I got another speeding ticket in that year! It was REALLY REALLY REALLY dumb to push the system. Had I just paid the fine, it would have been $180 bucks, over and done with.

I have progressive insurance and they don't care if its speeding, DUI, or careless. They are all worth the maximum of 3 points on my insurance costs. So the insurance wasn't a big deal, but OTHER insurance companies could DROP YOU if you have a careless on your record. So there is lots to be worried about.

EDIT: also I have fought all other tickets in the past with mixed results, some dropped, others I was charged the full fine plus $60 court costs.

I would advise to just pay this (depending on what you were doing, ESPECIALLY if you have a bad prior record!) because it was not worth it for me. In full disclosure I had 2 speeding tickets on my record over the last few years before this occured, so my record was not squeeky clean, but not terrible either. I was 27 years old at the time.

This is the best thing that can happen. Not all cities call it this, but the idea is if you don't get another "same or similar" ticket in 1 year, it is dropped. You usually pay a higher fine for this, but it is insignificant compared to insurance.

Just go to a hearing officer and tell them you just want to keep it off your record. It's really a win-win in my opinion. You get lower insurance rates, and they get you to slow down for a year. If you decide that 100mph is more your style, then they get you for 2 tickets.

Dont think I will be able to get it taken away. I already have some tickets that were almost off my record with no same or similar offenses and i think this ticket might have ****ed it all up.

That is what I want to do I wouldnt mind doing community service at all. Its a hell of a lot cheaper than paying for a ticket and having it go on your record

I'm pretty sure it still goes on your record at that point. You're getting convicted of a crime, and that crime is going to show up on your record. I don't think they'll give you that kind of punishment and keep it off the books.

maybe it's just me, but there was a time that if you were having a little fun on the lake it was okay. I got pulled over by some "kid" in Forest lake for driving fast and doing some doughnuts on Forest Lake. I still don't understand how a cop can have jusrisdiction over what happens on the ice if they can't drive a vehicle on it? I know of a specific situation in Wisconsin where a person was joyriding a friends car and he crashed into a group of other cars, and the cop would not write a ticket or accident report.

My question is, where is this "racetrack" on the St. Croix? Could you tell us more about how this happened?

I know! WTF happened to just letting some things go. Beyond running your car around the lake, so many things now-a-days get you in significant long lasting trouble (records/fines/etc) that would have just been laughed off just a few years ago.

Because they need the revenue, plain and simple. I don't hate cops by any means, I hate selective enforcement, and lack of common sense. Notice the uprise in people complaining about tint tickets in the past 6-9 months? I have. In fact, I received three in less than four months. None of them held up either. I had a cop pull me over for having a single TN plate and actually try to ticket me for it while I was still in the military. STUPID. They love to pull you over, slap a piece of paper in your hand, and ride off to the next meal ticket. They are too lazy to do things right when they pull you over, or write it up correctly, that it costs more money because you're damn right I'm not going to just write a check and move on. All of my tint tickets were written up incorrectly, and the first time, he didn't check the % of my tint at all.....The last one I received was a week before my Jetta was totaled by an old lady, and it stated that I knew it was a problem, and just didn't care. Come on, like anyone would ever say that to a cop that wasn't a retard. Budget cuts mean "crackdown time" on the rest of the community, since the $$ has to come from somewhere.

Not to say that I wouldn't have done the same thing if I had a truck, but if he felt that there was a chance that you could hurt someone else or yourself... than you get a ticket. Plain and simple. I would take a shot at going to see a hearing officer, but for a careless you may be screwed.

Sorry, but there is a big difference between driving on a lake and driving on a river. It's plain idiotic do be driving an auto out there. You can be relatively safe on a lake. It is never safe on a river, no matter how cold it is.

You deserve to be fined for putting tax dollars at risk potentially rescuing you or dragging your frozen car and corpse out of the river. Seriously dumb, dude.

Who maintains this 'race track' on the St. Croix?

I wish you could see the pictures i took so you could see I was not the only car out there. There was like 50+ vehicles out there and almost all of them were trucks. Plus the ice on the rive is 2 feet thick everywhere and if it wasnt safe they wouldnt have an ice road going across the river. So dont say I am a idiot.

Ice erosion on rivers is very common due to flow. The average thickness might be 2 feet, but in thin spots it could be as little as an inch or two. Plus there is the added problem of outside water. Rivers can thaw out in cold weather because of variances in temperature elsewhere, unlike most small lakes which are generally not fed by substantial flows of water, but rather rainfall, so they remain relatively stable through the winter.

Also the risk of drowning on a river is much MUCH greater then on a lake. On a lake you fall in and you sit there near where you fell in, and freeze your butt off, a bad situation to be sure but not nearly as bad as a iced river. On a Iced river you get pulled downstream under the ice, and if its a thin spot in what is otherwise a thick freeze, your 100% ****ed. How are they gonna break predominately 2 foot thick ice for a rescue attempt, let alone see where you are?

In a car you might have a better chance, but probably not by much.

Saying "Well other people were doing it." is what you here from high school students to justify stupid, dangerous, reckless, and otherwise undesirable actions. Since when has been saying that you were part of a herd been a good thing? Even in the military, the defense "I was ordered too" and "Its what the unit was doing" don't work.

Wise up, pay the ticket, and please, don't drive on rivers in cars.

I stand by my assessment. Driving on a river is pure idiocy. I grew up on the St. Croix and know how many people drive through the ice every year even on (much lighter weight) snowmobiles.

At least you were in like company.

I would like to see the pictures, however...
