Since you already know Subaru engines and systems why wouldn't you get an older Impreza or Legacy? My old 96 Impreza L was real quick in the dirt/gravel with used gravel tires fitted. You can go even older until it enters your price range.

Beyond that maybe look at a 1G AWD DSM, or for some real fun get a RWD car like an old Nissan (even a Datsun 510), maybe an old MR2. There are also lots of FWD candidates in old VW shells.

I guess it comes down to what you prefer, though again I'd say use another Impreza so you can get a little more experience in the dirt behind the wheel of a car similar to yours. Or just rally-x your current Impreza, hell I did that with every car I've owned.

My 1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R is for sale, cheap. It's already set up as a Rally-X car. Took 2nd in class today, 4th overall, and the limiting factor is that I'm not running true gravel tires and my competition was.

This car has taken 1st overall at events, and it regularly beats WRXs. I'm definately faster on a Rally-X course in it than I am in my WRX.

PM me if you want more info.

Well in all truth lowering the car properly will give you better performance on a rally-x course just like it would on a tarmac event. Obviously you wouldn't do stage rally in a lowered car but almost every rally-x event I've run has been tame enough for lowered cars. My turbo RS was lowered an inch (Eibach and KYB/AGX) and it ran just fine. The only course I didn't run it on was the old one we used to have in a gravel quarry near Northfield, but that one really required a skidplate even if you weren't lowered. I recall some pretty large chunks of "gravel" getting onto the course.

Who else was it who ran a Sentra up there? I seem to recall catching up to one making a helluva lotta dust at Headwaters several years back...

Lets see, if you were catching a SE-R, it was probably Eric Seppanen.

'Cause after he sold it to Jake Himes, the only time anyone caught him, it was when he crashed

i have heard the nissan 200xs is a fun little rallyx car.

i would just invest in some primitive skid plates and go for it. (thats mhy plan anyway)

an old mustang. i know it sounds crazy, but the damn things are a dime a dozen, RWD, and have loads of torque. Throw on some dirt tires and kick ass.

Otherwise, AWD anything. i know you can get away with a FWD and still have some fun, but goin' sideways with your right foot is always more fun than goin' sideways with your right hand. :)

There's a somewhat-prepared RX-7 (FC) for sale on the rally classifieds if you're looking to do the RWD thing. Personally if I were to get a car just for rally-x I'd probably go RWD just for fun.

Yeah, it was Seppanen's car. Wasn't Jake his codriver back then? I forgot he switched seats. We probably would have been seeded ahead of him by then though because that's when Steve got his Evo 7 from RalliArt (which he never ran).

BTW Dennis Martin's newest Evo 4 (at least I hope it's not the same shell he's been using these years and more) is for sale at $25k. Overkill for rally-x but in case anyone is thinking of making the leap...

Yeah, Jake was his co-driver at least near the end. Actually I think Eric gave up after OFPR 2002 when Jake got so sick they had to quit after the first half of day one. He'd just dumped money into a new DMS suspension too.

But Jake sure could pedal that thing, especially once he got over the crashing problems.

Who did you co-drive for? I'm assuming Steve, but which Steve?

I can definitely agree with this ;)

Just giving ya hell Mark. Sorry I couldn't make it out to the last rally-x, my gf had her face in the toilet all weekend and I had to do the bf thing and help her out  . I'll see ya at shooting star though :)

I'm faster than most people in their WRXs on a Rally-X course with the Sentra.

WRX's make lousy rallyx cars in fact. Too heavy, push too much when it gets slick, not enough low-end torque and too high gearing. The GC chassis cars are better.

Stage rally is a completely dofferent story, of course.

Oh, and a set of 15" wheels for a WRX run about $760 at the very cheapest. I'm selling the Sentra for $750, so it's cheaper than just wheels for a WRX.

Of course I'm selling it to buy wheels for the WRX, but that's for stage rally, and I'll have to deal with being slower again at rally-Xs.

I hope I see you at SS, as it stands right now, unless we get 11 more entries by this Friday, it's going to be cancelled. :(

I codrove for Steve Nielsen back when he was running the 1G DSM.

Yes, the WRX doesn't make such a great car for rally-x because of the low speeds and tight course. The 2.5RS makes an excellent rally-x car because of the torque coming on quicker. Even the older 2.2 Imprezas do pretty well against a WRX. Most of the course is in 1st or 2nd (*shudder*) gear anyway.
