This weekend a few others and I on the forum took part in a 24 hour race known as CHUMPCAR others and I will attest that it was a whole lot of fun and I know that I would love to do it again. Its a bit like 24 hour of lemons, but there are not ridiculous rules and the emphasis given on theme are much lower. It's more race oriented and was a fantastic experience. The event took place at Iowa Speedway outside of Des Moines.

It's also an extremely cheap way to get into racing, the team i was with has participated in 3 races now--not all of them are 24 hours long--and have spent under 4k on car, tires, the works. And they have been on the podium in all of their races.

The rules are pretty simple, the max you can spend on your crap can of a car is
$500, minus safety equipment, tires, and a few other items.

Consider this my shout out to chump car! I really enjoyed the weekend and didn't sleep for over 36 hour straight while running the pits etc., totally worth it.

I would encourage anyone interested to look into it. The idea is simple: find the biggest POS you can find, put in some safety equipment, and go racing. Anyone can do it and it's a great way to spend a weekend.

    The results.
    We were B.A.R. Team.

Sidenote: B.A.R. team was in first place until the last twenty minutes of the twenty four hour race. But issues with fuel made us make a last minute pit stop that put us in third at the end. We'll be shooting for a first in the next race. Hope to see you there.

Team mayhem competed at BIR a couple weeks ago and did good with a crappy civic. I got to drive a crappy saab 900 this last weekend in Iowa, it was one of the most fun things I've ever done and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about real racing. Just use a reliable car, not a saab. We were in 7th place at about 16 hours into it until I blew up the motor, we ended up getting 12th. I will be doing it again, with a better car.

I was one of the drivers of the #3 Three Sheets Racing at BIR, I didn't drive at Iowa.

Mike Wray, the car owner, on rare occasions posts here as legacyPGT, but he's pretty much out of Subarus (at least as far as driving, I'm pretty sure he's still one of the best Subaru mechanics around the area) and into BMWs these days, so he's hardly ever here.

I was at Iowa as "crew chief" for Three Sheets Racing. It was a blast. Here are a few crappy pictures I managed to take.

Jesse I saw your car but it was 2:30 AM and I needed to get on with my 1.5 hours of sleep before the next pit stop so I didn't get a chance to talk to you. Sounds like you did have a chance to chat with Nick (n1ck) though. It seemed like Cougar Bait had no problems with reliability in their Saab since they won it.

they had a dedicated crew from saab dealerships. My experience working on it, I would rather use something else. It uses an electric pump for the power brakes that's integrated into the ABS, that was fun to get working again sans abs. And a lot of other things that are backwards that don't make sense.

Haha oh yes I know all about it. My roommate has a 96 900 I've helped him do a few things with.
