First off the car is a 06 STI with stage 2.

When the engine is at 2500-2750 rpm for about 15-20 sec. something starts to clunk. Also driving down the road at the same rpm it has the same clunk and when I slow down it it continues, if I push the clutch in it seems to slow down and then go away. it is really hard to figure out where the noise is coming from because if it was in the motor, pushing the clutch in would changing any thing.

Anybody have any ideas what this could be?

For the 06 STI, Subaru changed the engine mounts to a liquid filled plastic mount. Many people broke the mounts in various situations early on. Subaru issued a recall to change the mounts back to the standard rubber ones found on 04-05 and 07 STI's. The recall is covered by SOA and any Subaru dealership should do it for free as long as you schedule it in ahead of time.

    That could be your problem.

Does this actually happen? I always thought short of a collision they wouldn't.

(Then again, if the liquid mounts are breaking and allowing more movement, I guess..)

It has happened, but not usually on the Impreza's. It was something more common with the Tribeca's.

The "liquid" mounts are not the fault as they do not offer much for movement in that forward/backward movement. Most of the mounts that I saw broken were due to the plastic housing where they bolt to the block. They would fracture, and crack into pieces.

Dan, just make sure that people understand that a "Recall" does not have to replace the mounts if the vehicle is out of the warranty dates that the recall applies to.

If anyone needs the recall performed, make sure you contact the dealer about parts availability, and to see if the VIN# of your vehicle applies to the bulletin/recall.

I just got back in to town and haven't had the chance to check the mounts. When drivng if the noise happens and I pushing in the clutch to drop the RPMs it slows down and then stops. It kinda sound like if you hold something in a fan until it stops, click.click..click...click....click.......click and then done.

Good point! I don't remember if this recall applies to vehicles out of the warranty period or not. Usually, if you walk into the dealership unannounced, they will turn you down right away for something like this (unless the car is still newish). Be sure to call ahead of time! If the recall does not apply to vehicles out of warranty, then your best bet is to try the dealership from which you bought the car.
Well that's a completely different sound than I was imagining. Better check your oil level first.

Oil level is good. I guess I will just have to bring it in to have it looked at and see if they can figure it out.

Turns out that it was a crank in the oil pick up tube and messed up a bearing.

Holy cow! Glad you got that figured out and thanks for getting back to us. So it was a cracked oil pickup tube? What's the plan now? New or used replacement shortblock or are you going to try to repair your current shortblock? Better look into the KillerB oil pickup for your next setup.
