I don't see any tears, or grease on the boot, I'm pretty sure its coming from the left rear. I checked to see if there was any play in the tires, so I'm sure its not a bearing. How typical is it for a shaft to go bad? I found a remanufactured for $125, what else could it be?? When I have it jacked up and spin the rear tires, I can't get it to make the noise, its usually when I'm slowing down to a stop or if I am going over a bump in the road really slow it clunks. Anyone have a shop that we could lift it up and check it out??
yep. sti or wrx? my sti has 2 bad ones right now damn you subaru. off topic, when they change out 06 and 04 sti struts that are known to go bad do they put better redesigned ones in?
02 wrx You think so? I mean I can hear it sometimes when I'm cruising at 65mph and I can hear a distinct clunk Also, how would I check to see if that was the problem
What struts are you running? And Zapman, they put the same struts back in. IIRC, the clunking in the USDM STI is due to the fact that our springs are softer with less drop. From what I've seen, a recommended fix is a spring with about 10mm less drop and a stiffer rate, which I think the JDM pinks are. I've also heard of Prodrives helping cure it, basically the strut ends up extending about 10-12mm past where it should due to less drop/rate and wears out after a while.
Stock struts So when I lift up the car on the left rear side just using my hands in the wheel well and push back down to compress the strut/spring, I can hear it making the clunking noise, just a lot quieter.
I think I am haveing the same problem. I am guessing the time to replace them would be when I do my stuts? If so what ones should I get and where should I get them? I have prodrive springs and I am going to order KYB AGX struts...
hmmm. I've been noticing a popping noise in mine, don't think its the struts though. Sounds like the muffler expanding/contracting? Weird, almost sounds like someone smacks the muffler one time with a ball peen hammer when I shut it off! Thought maybe you were having the same problem, guess I was wrong. Not to hijack or anything, but does anyone know what this ^could be??
you could always upgrade to STi Group N strut mounts. I've seen them go for 220-250 for all four. Much stiffer than our wrx mounts that flex like crazy
