well my clutch is slippin pretty bad on my 04 sti and i'm trying to find a good replacement. I'm going to be putting a 20g on the car so i want it to have a little more hold than the stocker. also, i'm trying to find one with a lighter flywheel but i might just have the stock one resurfaced. what would you guys do? tryin to keep the budget relatively low on this one but any suggestions would help. thanks alot
Well idk what your budget is but i got a stage 2 zoom for 500 and i like it a lot granted i just put it on but i noticed a big difference.
Be careful with getting a clutch that is to strong. Cause if you clutch wont give that means the 5 speed transmission will give and thats not good.
ya i was thinkin a stage 3 clutch but i am just wonderin about the flywheel element, should i just have it resurfaced or is it worth it investing in a new lighter one since i'm going to be down there anyways
Its 100 percent up to you. You will loose some rotational weight with an after market flywheel. But is it worth the cost? I don't personally think so. I was in the same shoes you were six months ago. I just resurfaced the stock one and reinstalled it. For the 300+ dollars for an after market one I could put that money to better use.
Ask p3tis about the Spec stage 3+. He likes it but says its a bear in traffic. I'm in the market for a 6mt clutch as well. I'd like something streetable, but will hold what my turbo will put down. The ACT SB4-HDSS sounds nice to me, and it supposedly will hold 475 lb-ft, which is about what my turbo will support, with different heads of course. Spec stuff looks nice, and a kevlar disk may be nice, but the stuff is spendy. What I really want is the Exedy Hyper single carbon, but I cannot justify $1900 for a clutch and flywheel.
already did, hes going to be doing the install. i think i'm going to go with clutchmasters stage 3+their aluminum flywheel. seems like a decent price
i'm in the same boat i have a 04 sti and i'm doing the clutch myself. i'm going to see if the boss will let me do it in the shop or i'll just do it in the garage of my home but i went with a stock flywheel and a stage one clutchmasters. but i'm wondering when you open the hex plup to pull the pin to pull the fork what bolt do you need to pull the pin? also when should i drain the fluid? and i really dont want to pull the axels is there another way besides that and pulling the motor? all depending anyone want to help?
The big pin in the tranny has a threaded hole in it, just screw a bolt in it and pull it out. Also you do not have to drain the tranny fluid to do a clutch.
Just make sure you put some rags or something in the holes for the axels and the driveshaft. I learned the hard way with about 2 quarts of gear oil spilled under the car that I had to smell for two months. :roll:
I love my spec stage 3+. It holds the 20g powa and was pretty reasonable. I did not purchase a flywheel with it, I just had the stocker resurfaced. As Piddster mentioned it can be punishing in traffic. A little bit here and there is ok but heavy stop and go traffic will give you the left leg workout.
