I was just talking to a friend of mine who has a 96 or 97 Impreza OBS 2.2l 5spd. Normally there is very little take up in the pedal before the clutch engages. She just brought her car to a full service car wash place and when she got it back there was significantly more travel in the clutch pedal before the clutch engages. She has maybe driven 2 miles like this, then called me to see if it was ok. I am kind of stumped

IIRC this car should use a cable system (not hydraulic) to move the shift fork, which has very little that would be affected by getting wet. does anyone have any ideas of what could cause this? and if it is a major concern? I believe the clutch was replaced in Dec/Jan. Could the nuts on the clutch cable come loose giving it more slack?

They were probably beating on it, OR she isnt used to the floor mat being where it was supposed to be? they probably moved it when they vaccumed.

There is either an interlock switch (if it has cc) or a bolt to adjust the clutch pedal height. On the clutch pedal arm there is a white plastic bushing/spacer thingy. My guess is that either the interlock switch/adjustment bolt got moved/bent or the plastic bushing on the pedal broke/fell off. That would allow the pedal to travel up higher than normal and therefore introduce more play.

That white plastic piece broke on my car on the clutch pedal and cause a similar problem.

This picture is showing the brake pedal which has a similar setup, but you can just barely see the clutch pedal plastic piece I'm talking about near the middle of the left edge of the pic.

I kind of doubt it is the floor mat.

That little plastic piece very well could be the culprit. I believe this piece you are referring to is circled in red now. Do you know if you can get a replacement piece from the dealership or do you need to get the whole clutch pedal assembly?
