About a month ago I had my car start slipping in 3Rd and 4th gear at wot. I don't wot until 3k rpms. In my testing it's less prone to slip with a 3k rpms wot than with a 2.5k rpm wot. My car would slip (rev) then catch at 4500. However the slip is pretty intermittent. I haven't had it slip in 1st, 2nd or 5th. And it's been a week since I've had a 3rd or 4th gear slip. I bought a new clutch and flywheel to install in the next couple of weeks. I'm just curious if anyone else has had intermittent clutch slips like this and am wondering if I need to be checking for anything else in the drive line. I did have an under 100k mileage rear differential put in about 6 months ago. Im just thrown off by the fact that it doesn't slip during daily driving and that it sometimes doesn't even slip at wot at all. Maybe my clutch is just starting to go bad? The car is a 2002 wrx with 226k miles.

The clutch will start to slip when the engine rpms are closest to the torque peak and when it has the highest load. That is why 3rd is used for tuning most often. My old wrx and legacy started slipping in 3rd gear.

Good to know. Every other manual I've driven was NA and basically the clutch would die so fast once it would start to slip. So it would take a minute or 2 to even hit 60 mph. Which is not the case with my subaru as it holds the 7 whatever psi I hit when daily driving.

It's going to seem intermittent and keep getting more frequent until you just can't give it any torque. Guessing the NA's you were used didn't have a lot of peak torque, so when the clutch was done it was done. If you have a torque monster then if it's slipping at peak torque you still have a ways to go before you can't really get it moving at lower torque levels... but it will happen soon enough.

Oe clutches are made by exedy clutch. They are very good. I would strongly suggest that you replace it with the exedy stock replacement if your close to or stock.

Thanks for the wisdom. It's still holding the 7 psi daily driving but definitely won't hold any wot anymore haha. Yeah the n/a's I drove were slow fwd cars. A corolla and an eclipse... not much torque there and if there was the tires spun.

That was the concensus I received from my research too. I already have a new one I got last week. Just waiting for the fly wheel to come in. I think I chose the act light weight. Didn't seem like anyone had the Phantom misfires with it but who knows. I'm basically stock until I can flat bed my car or limp it to a tuner. I have a lot of stuff to go on but nothing that will put me over 300 hp.
