I have been noticing a problem with my 03 wrx with what i think is related to the cold weather but im not totally sure. when i start my car in the morning and when I leave from work i can notice when ever i back out my car almost seems that it wants to die. I'm giving it enough gas and pulling out the clutch like i normally do everyday. im not on a crazy incline or anything just a flat surface. when i finally do get it going it likes to jack rabbit and it likes to rev high when i change gears. am i just not giving my car enough time to warm up or do i have a internal problem. also last year i noticed on really cold days my throttle was terible like something was holding my throttle clossed but it would become unstuck once I got moving a distance. any input from a veterain subaru owner?
jezz um where to start haha. so about 88,000 on the odometer. catless turbo back exhaust, k&n drop in filter, GS uppipe with external wastegate, 1000cc injectors with walboro fuel pump running e85, GS 5 speed tranny cocktail, GS BCS and mishimoto aluminum rad running distilled water(going to change to coolant soon). ams oil 5w-30 full synthetic. there is more but mostly suspension and heat mangment upgrades.
Who tuned the car? I know that my E85 maps were adjusted when the temps started hitting 40* the first time around. Granted I was the first 09+ that was tuned on E85 by that tuner so we knew that some adjustments would be required with the change in seasons/temps. After some quick adjustments on the tables my car ran like a dream. I have had zero issues since then and this will be my 3rd winter on E85.
I don't know what their policy is on adjusting maps for a drop in temps. It might be worth looking into. I know it made a huge difference in my car. My idle issues sound just like what you are talking about. My tuner adjusted my maps and I haven't had an issue since.
i have been thinking of moving over to nuke since map is moving to the other side of the metro by the end of the year and i dont wanna drive all that way for a dyno. do i need to get it tuned when the temp will change from summer to winter and visa versa?
No. However, with E85 it is possible that tweaking your maps could help. It is just a guess. I am not a tuner, just letting you know what helped me. Again, my car was the first 09 that was tuned on E85 by my tuner, so the maps and how the car handled it was different from 02 - 07 and worlds apart from the 08's (which were a big flop).
should this be something i take care of asap? i got some things i would like to install but I need to wait on my turbo
Sooner rather than later i would think! I would be scared to drive my car if it was doing all of that.
wishing i could get all my upgrades in my car before getting it tunned but now it looks like thats not going to happen. Seems like this is a issue that needs to get resolved before i damage my car. hope nuke is free one of these days.
I think that it would definitely be better to fix it first, and then mod and retune. I know it's not as practical or cost efficient. But if you end up damaging something else...PITA.
It just sounds like the fuel trims are whompy. You don't want to starve the car of gas or flood it either. Get it logged asap!
In the mean time before you get it fixed just start warming the car up for a few minutes like you would in the winter. I let my car sit and idle for 5 minutes before i go anywhere when its 50 or less right now since the warmup fueling is a little off for the cooler temps. once it is warmed up does your car run normally?
Nuke may recommend that you switch to pump gas for the cold weather months. That is what I ended up doing last year.
And then he bought a Pontiac. LOLZ Ben, Myself, Lor and many others run E85 all year round. I thought that you swapped out because of your location?!?
oh lord i would never burn my money on a pontiac. i run e85 year around. I do have stations all around me. mostly did it for more power
Sorry I was talking to BroCo. He got a new winter car and I was giving him a hard time. The E85 comment was to him too. You just type faster than I do.
Nuke told me that it is hit or miss on cold starts. I'm sure he will chime in at some point. I picked up the Boni to cut down the miles on the STI and keep it nice. Plus I will need something to drive when the build process begins.
A free Pontiac...nah, i'll pass! Lullz. Well as long as you keep the STi around Bro, then it's all good Bro. And i believe that most Pontiacs are 5x100 too. Maybe slap some WRX stockers with winters on there and i'll feel a little better about it. LMAO
Josh suggested that it might be my idle air control valve. I'm going to look at that after work clean and replace the gasket. ill report back with my findings
So I pulled the IACV off and it was very dirty. I fallowed scooterforever on NAISOC on how to clean it. cleaned it out with q-tips and gasoline. as you can tell it really cleaned it out in the pictures. now i just have to see what happens tomorrow morning and when i drive home from work. regardless of if this works i would suggest that everyone with DBW to clean this thing out.
yea thats what meant to say. ill keep posting on my findings after today on if the problem was fixed. heres to fingers crossed.
well it seems that the problem is partially fixed. pulled out the driveway this morning with no issues. pulled out from my parking space after work and was fine. after backing out and put it into first and it seemed to stick again but it was not like long before it became ustuck. not sure what to do now. should i go ahead and get my car tuned or should i be fine. thoughts?
