Started up my 2005 Subaru Legacy wagon today and heard something making kind of a thump under the hood, opened it up and saw a strip of one of my drive belts, the interior one, had separated and was off track. I took both belts off and decided they were fairly cheap so why not replace them both. Got new ones m confirmed they were the right width and diameter. Put the new ones back on and tensioned them up to what we believed was right according to reading some forums and comparing to a friends STI. Started the car and heard the same noise and noticed the belts both jumped off track right away, set it all up again with slightly more tension and same thing happened again. I looked more closely at the pulleys and noticed they weren't lining up quite right and it appears the crankshaft pulley came apart pics attached. Question is, is this as simple as getting a new one and pulling off the big bolt holding it on and putting the new one on or is it more complicated. I don't know a ton about cars but I know my way around and am generally good with a wrench, but if it is a lot more complicated I might be better off taking it in Has anyone ever had any experience with this happening and have any advice what to do?
Hopefully the attachment works this time... It looks like the track part of the pulley separated from the spindle. So I'm assuming it needs to be replaced. Would the belt coming loose have caused that to happen or would it be independent of the belts.
Its from running the belts too tight, my impreza with mid200K miles has its original pulley. Its more common for them to just fall off because someone didnt get the crank bolt tight enough.
