Im changing the oil for the first time on my forester, and i got a new filter and a crush plug from the dealership. The question i have is when i removed my old plug, there was 2 washers. One that looked like the reg crush plug, and one copper-colored one. I already took both of the old ones off and put the new one on and tightened it. I just wanted to make sure i did it right before i put oil in. Thanks a bunch!!!!
In the future you will want to make sure you get the old washer out so you dont double up as it can cause a leak. Same goes for the oil filter, make sure that the rubber gasket comes out with the old filter before you install the new one.
Leaving the "old" Oil Filter gasket on is the most common mistake so make sure it is accounted for. "Almost" messed up the wife's Soccer Bus changing oil in a hurry with poor lighting. Learning the hard way sucks.
yeah don't do that. i did that on my civic once. nothing like dropping 4 qts of oil in your garage and all over the engine. always, always, always make sure that the gasket is on the oil filter and not your engine.
I did that on my ranger. Drove it 3000 miles. Changed the oil again and found out. The two gaskets were pert ner fused together, like overlaping like when you make a Venn diagram. Never lost any oil. It was a miracle!!
^ I had an issue like this. Although on one oil pan (I have had many on the same motor) never leaked and I used the same crush washer on it for a couple of years. My conclusion is that the amount of oil you will loose to a drip from the crush washer is negligible. If you lose more than a Qt from your crush washer you have some really bad issues.
I've never replaced a washer on any car I've ever owned...15 years now... :laugh: I don't know. I don't see the point. It does depend on the vehicle. Some don't use metal washers and do use things that are more disposable in nature. For any plug using a metal washer, I don't touch it. I've never lost a single drop in 15 years. Come to think of it, not one person in my entire family has ever gotten into the habit of replacing washers on any car anybody has ever owned. So... :dunno: I don't know why you guys do it.
This has me curious... If Subaru uses a copper washer for both tranny drain bolts on the M6, why not on the oil side (other then price. those copper washers are a joke). Or, why not use the cheaper style washer on the tranny as well?
my crush washer started leaking after a few re-uses. now I just replace it if I remember/can find my new ones
I replace mine every other or every third oil change. Replace it before it leaks, else it makes a mess. I mean WTF, they're how many pennies for a new gasket? Why not replace it?
cause I never remember until I already have the oil drained...... "oh well. maybe next time" I have yet to remember :laugh:
