I am working on a car project (datsun 240z) where I'm trying to completely transform a car -I'm going to be making my own body panels and everything - I would really like to modify the original windshield - give it a lower angle - and what I'd really like to do is make it rap-around the side further than normal. I know this car is completely a prototype and actually made for the new transformers movie - but I really like the windshield http://media.nextautos.com/images/sideswipe_600.jpg Is it at all possible to achieve something like that realistically? I think it could probably be done - maybe a professional custom hot-rod place could help out with that or I don't know - but I feel these kinds of things are more so an issue of money - but can it be done - is my question there is a 240z that had the windshield cut and with a lower angle http://www.zparts.com/sidebars/sb_kw/kwrdstrv8_main.html so I know that can be done - but the rap-around look would be the hard part
Custom glass is extremely expensive, due to the amount of capital it takes to even make glass. Only large companies like Viracon and PPG have the resources to do it, realistically. Unless you can source something that already exists, you are in for a lot more than you are bargaining for. Is the car a convertible? If so then the rake of the windsheild isn't that bad to modify. Cut and welded sections need reinforcement since you are taking work-hardened sheetmetal and bringing it back to an annealed state by welding it.
*sigh* another classic destroyed with gaudy crap. If you are going to transform a car, why not transform a common pile of **** instead of wrecking perfectly good cars that others would like to RESTORE, not DESTROY. Yes I crapped in your thread, yes this is off-topic.
most of the wrap around looks are just painted a pillars. even that first pick looks lie they just painted them?
I got the car because I need something to work from - if I got a car that was smashed head to toe torched and then sunk in the ocean for a few years - it would never run again I got the car - and I like to add my own personal touch to things - I don't want to restore it to stock because it's already been done thousands of times - to me it's nothing special - I want to do something unique you can't say it is destroyed if you don't even know the finished product - you don't know it will be gaudy - why always speculate with a pessimistic view point? I personally think many old hot rods look much nicer than the car if it was restored stock form - that's just me I don't ask for taste opinions because everybody has their own - I ask for technical advice - because I'd like to know more so it DOESN'T become DESTROYED
right - I know it wasn't one piece windshield - it still has seperate side windows - but the front windshield still wraps around the sides a quite a bit
It works with hot-rods because they have been doing it to them since the dawn of time, Jap muscle is far more rare then american muscle.
I'm restoring a Datsun, it wasn't smashed head to toe and burned. It was just old...and when I'm done with it, it will be tasteful and true to the original with personal touches that aren't over the top gaudy. And we are going by your previous threads where you talk about two tone paint, and airbrushing the hood for "sophistication." That IS gaudy. So do pedophiles.
In all honesty, it would be a pretty bitchin' look if you can pull it off. However, I'll be honest, it's going to be extremely expensive to do though. Usually when I've seen one-off stuff like that, it's because there's a lot of bank involved or because the owner also fabricated everything they needed. Based on the fact that you're asking about glass/framework, I'm going to take it that you haven't fabricated something like that before. At this point, you'll probably want to ask yourself how much money you can pitch at it (be real about it) and start calling some hot rod places. My instinct would be to talk to shops that deal with chop-tops.
as far as hot-rods - they all had to start sometime - Im sure people told them the same thing when they first started... its all gaudy and stupid and all of that as far as the comment about previous threads - it was all hypothetical - and if you didn't realize it - I was using paints and colors that would all blend together rather closely with a little contrast in light - gaudy is bright contrasting colors that don't match or go together at all - I know art work - I know what looks like **** and what doesnt you havent seen my ideas or have any clue what I am talking about - so again -it's bogus to insult it ... Like I already said - I don't care about your tastes - I wanted to know of the technical part of things - obviously some people don't understand questions and would rather equate me to a pedophile with out knowing a thing about me or what I am wanting to do.. I ask opinions because I take a lot of consideration into doing projects and I want to get a broad range of ideas - and I'll play with them from there
That corvette concept thing that's in Transformaers 2 is gaudy and ugly as sin IMHO. Here's a bunch more pictures. http://www.autoblog.com/photos/chicago-2009-corvette-centennial-concept-live/
