So walking into the cub foods parking lot today i noticed an audi with a euro front vanity plate. upon closer inspection, i found it was a minnesota plate that had been cut so that all you could see was the number/lettering. the plate was about half the height of a normal plate with the top, bottom, and sides being cut off. the back plate was completely intact with the tabs and everything.

i wish i could have gotten a picture, but i didnt.

    is this legal?
    it actually looked really good.

I kinda like that idea but I highly doubt it's legal. It's like cutting up your driver's license or title into little shapes because they look cool.

I'm sure us subarus could get away with smashing a snowbank and having it fold back.

Oh wait, most of us already have that. ha

Ah, but the law isn't clear.. it says that

"one plate must be displayed on the front and one on the rear of the vehicle."

If you were to translate the law.. and remember, law is written to be interpreted from many different angles, it COULD read as this: as long as you have ONE plate that has all of this stuff on it, it wouldn't be illegal to have the 2nd plate displaying only the number. But that is just me, and how i interpret the law. If I feel this way, it stands to reason that other lawyers would most likely agree with me, even though there would be dissenters that you'd have to face on the off-chance that you got in trouble for it.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. I see people being pulled over for having expired stickers, yet the cops completely ignore the ass that has his plate covered with snow in the winter (even though the law is CLEAR on that, you CAN NOT obstruct the plate AT ALL .. EVER .. and you MUST clear the snow off your plates when digging your car out - no exceptions!!!! GOD I HATE THESE PEOPLE WHO DON'T CLEAR THEIR PLATES!!!) - and they run around all friggin winter with their back/front plates covered and get no flack, so whatever. I feel tabs are stupid. If the plate is current, the cop will know by running it, so who cares if the tabs are displayed? I don't write the law though. And I'd rather not get into a discussion about law interpretation, as it is up to each individual to get what they will out of what is already out there.

I bet this car you saw looked damn hot tho!

License plate is property of the state, not you.
    No, you can't modify it.
