I have an 02 WRX. My goal is I am going to change all of my dash lights and interior lights to blue LED's, but to get the right LED I need to know what the stock bulb number is.

search nasioc there are bulb condoms I think they refer to them as, basically they are just little rubber covers for light bulbs that you can change your color with, scoobymods probably has this mod in it's archive. Plenty of info out there on this, I don't believe you even have to change bulbs.

The reason I want to switch is LED's draw less current, I know a freind that switched out his tahoe lights to LED's and he says he is getting preformance. LED's take less to power and last a lot longer.

go to www.i-club.com go to the forums, go to the Impreza interior lighting forums. there is a stickied thread there about changing bulbs out for LEDs. its called the quest for better interior lighting.

you will probably need to get a few 74 (big ones) and quite a few 94 (small ones) i think those are they right numbers. my guages too 6 big bulbs, and abotu 12 small ones.

As someone that did 2 years of R&D on LED lights (for emergency vehicles), I can tell you that they do indeed draw less current, but you will not see a performance difference. Does your car slow down when you turn the radio on? If not, LEDs will do nothing for performance. A stock radio draws more current than the delta you will see changing to LEDs. However, they will last far longer than any car, on the order of 100,000+ hrs of lifetime if properly biased.

Now, when they finally release LED headlights, that will be something cool. I remember working with some of the first white LEDs, they were amazing. At the time, they predicted they would be available in the '04-'05 timeframe, but I see that they are still not quite there, expect to start seeing them in the next 2 years...

Oh oh, and there is color adjustable LEDs now, too. They actually have 3 chips in them (different colors) and they can change to any color based on the intensity of each of the 3 chips. They can be computer controlled for some very tricky light shows...

OK, school is out...... go drive your car.

question: since LEDs do draw less current dont you need to pair them with a resistor so you dont fry them? or atleast run multiple LEDs?

yes you would have to put a resistor in with them. Unless you buy LED drop in replacements. www.superbrightleds.com has som direct drop ins. My dome light and map lights were direct drop ins which had everything it would need to be put in and operate saftly

They do need to be controlled, but let me explain why. LEDs are diodes that emit light. Being diodes, they have a constant voltage drop across them regardless of the amount of voltage applied. What will blow a diode up is if the current through them is not "controlled". They actually have near zero resistance, so, if you hook one up to you car battery (15V, for arguments sake) it is essentially like short circuiting your battery. However, if you added a 1,000 ohm resistor in series, the current through the resistor would be 13.5mA (V=IR), assuming a 1.5V drop across the diode. So the more diodes you have in series, the smaller resistor you could use. If you used 10 LEDs with a 1.5V drop across each (easy math was the reason to pick 15V), you could disregard the resistor. Each LED has their own operating specs, typically ~3.5V drop and ~20mA current draw.

I could go on, but I think that explains more than you were looking for...
