does it retain file names from hard drives with damaged/corrupted boot sectors and partitions when recovering files?

As long as your harddrive can spin, it will recover it - I had a friend that blew away a partition, and it found files that were on that partition that was supposively "gone". You can fix your boot sector usually by using the windows recovery console and run "fixmbr c:" without the " "'s this will typically fix your boot sector, then run chkdsk /r /f from a command line and reboot your pc. If that doesn't work, pm me

I have been using Ontrack Pro for awhile. It can recover many, many things. Whether you accidentally deleted, re-formatted, had a partition or drive failure, it will get it back.

I have had machines at work have such jacked up hard disks, that you can't see the HDD in the BIOS, but Ontrack will detect and grab data from it.

got chance to use the ontrack software. was able to access my screwy harddrive and get all my files back intact. i highly recommend this software to anyone that keeps important files on their computer but are too stupid (i.e. like myself) to make back ups or don't back up frequently.
