Hey boys, It's that time of the year again!!! Who else is going hunting this weekend or next weekend? I'm heading up for the 2nd weekend - north of Paynesville, with a buddy who has family with land up there. Up until last year, I had been hunting for SEVEN years, and hadn't gotten anything. Not that I hadn't tried, I just either fell asleep or was on bad land. Last year, I saw doe after doe after doe walk right under my stand all day Saturday. Sunday morning, same thing, no bucks. Saturday afternoon, at about 3:00, a little spike five pointer came running out and I yelled at him quick, and stopped him broad side at about 80 yards. BANG! The slug hit a twig, and jumped a good 10" and took out his spine. I can't tell you how excited I was. We cleaned him out, and went back up to sit. About 40 minutes later, I was looking around, and from some thick brush out walked a NICE eitht-pointer. I let him walk right out into my lane, and he stopped. I figured the yardage to be about 100, so I lined him up, and BANG! (low) BANG, BANG, BANG... Crap, I missed. Remembering I had one more slug in the gun, I lead him a good 4' and BANG!!! Just before he got into some THICK brush, he flipped over in the air. Direct head shot. "GOT HIM!" I yelled to my buddy, and I shook with excitement and adrenaline for about 3 hours. I CAN'T WAIT!
Nice Buck!!! YES I can not wait. Couple more days, I'm hunting about 40mi south of Duluth. Although I never shot a deer with my rifle, I will not make a bad shot. I've seen plenty but never a good shot. Its always when you shoot at a deer and put it down, then the big boys come out and say "hey what the heck is going on around here". Well good luck to who ever is going out this weekend. BE SAFE!!!
I pretty excited this year. I have a week off for deer hunting for the first time ever. That's the only reason Im skipping the opener to go on the fun runs. The wife and I hunt the family "farm" up in Finlayson with my dad and sister. I'd post pics but scanning them in sounds like alot of work right now.
I am heading up to Hinckley for all three weekends, go hunting on the in-laws land. People are wondering if the deer are going to be present this year because there were hardly any bear and a pack of wolves killed a steer in the adjacent land. The wolves might be driving them off, hopefully not though, they should drive them towards me.
I've got land up in the Crosslake area that I'll be hunting on again this year. The number of deer are up, but the development around my cabin has really made it frustrating, since they don't like to wander through as much as they did before. I'm not going to bag anything this year unless it's a good sized 6+ pointer, or a good sized doe. I got a buck last year, a 160lb 6pointer. Dropped him with my .410, one shot. I guess I should mention he was about 12 feet away at the time... Haha! Good luck to all of you and as always, practice good muzzle control and be safe!
What do people like to use for hunting? Shotgun/rifle, what kind. I am a fan of my marlin 30-30 lever-action. Old-school hunting style, one shot only unless your really quick with that lever, or the dear is stupid.
I shoot the "old reliable" Remington 870 Express super Magnum. I LOVE the 3" slugs. Your shoulder definately knows they're 3"ers.
Remmington 700 BDL 30-06. I'll never get a shot over 80yds though, its just too thick. I won't be going this year. Since I'm in Mankato instead of Duluth, the drive to Grand Rapids is a little longer. That and this weekend I have to put my clutch in, so priorities overrule.
Meh, rifle hunting is too easy and archery season is open longer! I'm never too concerned about the rack on the deer, I just hunt for tasty venison :yumyum: Besides I normally did the headshot when rifle hunting anyway. I hated chasing down deer after a SPBT didn't mushroom so I made the obvious change to my firing pattern. I used to hunt with a Savage 110 30-06 but then upgraded to an HK refitted PTR-91 that I still have. I do still miss the old bolt action. My brother is putting together a .338 Lapua around a Remington 700 action but I sure hope he's not planning on using it for whitetail.
We have had some Timberwolf sightings up near our land, so we'll have to see what that does to the hunting. I use a Savage .270 anf the wife uses a Remington 710 .270
I hunt with a rifle since I don't have the time for archery. Maybe when I get out of school. I'm not a rack hunter either. I'm just as happy with a nice doe, or two. A freezer full of vension is a good thing :yumyum:
lol @ Kelly I haven't hunted for years. When I did I used either my 20-gauge Remington 1170 auto with 20" rifled slug barrel and open sights, or my .243 Winchester 870 series with a 3-9X adjustable scope. ADD/ADHD makes it extremely difficult to hunt something as ninja-like as a deer, anyway. So needless to say, I don't do much deer hunting.

I said it could be done, not that i could just go out there right now and get her done. So I ain't no Injun.
I got a spike last night, field dressed he weighs in at over 150# im guessing closer to 170-180. I'll add a pic later.
I use a Benelli 12 ga with a 2-7 scope and rifled barrel. Fat lot of good it did me this weekend. The only deer a saw was through the windsheild of the Jeep an hour before legal shooting. I did see about 100 wild turkeys, more squirrels than I wanted to count, many songbirds and one big f-in owl. Ted, what slugs do you use? I use Brenneke. Mark Utecht
I shoot Federal. A buddy of mine gave me like 10 boxes a few years ago so I haven't had a reason to try other brands. As I said earlier, I went 7 years without shooting at anything... I haven't heard from any of my buddies that were out this weekend yet. I didn't ge to go out this weekend, there wasn't room on the land that I hunt on. I am pretty excited for the weekend already!!!
You should see the shotglasses my brother has been using with the Wingmaster. He has a damn ACOG scope on it now too, it's kinda funny. I think his real slugs are some wicked sabots, I'd have to ask him the brand though. I miss being able to wake up and stick a deer off my porch or deck and calling in late to work in order to string it up.
I just talked to my buddy Sparky who I'm hunting with this weekend. The group that was up there got two 8 pointers and saw a ton of them running around. I'm pumped.
I'll be at the door of Gander in E.P. today at 9 when they open to get some heater packs and some last minute details. Then back to the office to sit here waiting until noon. Then off to get the rest of my stuff packed and head up north to beat the traffic. I can't wait.
I took a 1/2 day on Friday, so I have some catching up to do, and I'll post some better pictures later, but my buddy Sparky shot a HUGE 10 pointer on Saturday morning - after I missed it at 175 yards (no scope) it ran over to him. This thing was absolutely flying through the woods and he managed to hit him in the neck. I saw quite a few of them later Saturday and Sunday morning, but didn't have any decent shots. Here is Sparky and the deer (cleaned up digitally so I can show my wife) and I had to get a pic with it too: and the rack:
HOLY $#!*^^^ that is a huge buck!!! Here's my * pointer I shot. Sat morning about 7:20ish. I didn't not bring out my digi cam so I took pics after. My father in law has the other pics(will post them later). But here are mine. Oh I was about 45 miles straight south of duluth (Kerrick, MN)
Very nice deer! Did you get him with a shotgun or a rifle? ...and what did you use to take off his head?!?!?! Also, I am going to get a Scope for the Remington 870. Does anyone have any suggestions - either good or bad?
I got him with a FAL .308 style semi auto rifle. I used the Winchesters' balistic silver tip. Went down with one shot to the right rear leg artery.
Very nice guys, so who's house will the club be meeting at for some venasin BBQ? Anyone get a white deer on the board?
That's a great idea! I'd definately host a gathering with some venison on the grill. I'll post something when we get the meat back from Von Hanson's and put a date together. BTW - the pix have been updated above.
Great job with the sticks mr. Fuji! LOL My mgr said his friend came back with two deer heads. As he was sitting up in his deer stand when he heard something that sounded like some very noisey hunters, but when he turned around to look he saw a deer dragging another dead deer who he had locked horn's with. As he was very persistant in trying in getting unlocked he mananged to sever the neck from the body. So his friend took shot and got both head mounted together locked at the horns. Imagine that for a trophy.
well...this one was shot back in 2001 on THANKSGIVING morning....archery these are pics taken last year
/\/\/\ WOW. I've bow hunted for years (back in high school) but was never quiet, still or scent free enough to get one. I only took one shot at a deer with a bow, but was shaking so badly I missed low. GREAT deer!
