Im looking at two cameras and considering a third that i really want but cant figure out the difference in them, so if anyone has used any of them i need some reviews and recommendations.

Nikon D40 or the Canon rebel xt(is there a real difference in the xt and xti)

The one thing i do really want to know is which one is more capable at rolling/panning shots.

From what I understand, the XTI has 2.0 more megapixels and a larger LCD than the XT, that is it. ?

also photography-on-the.net but that's a canon forum so you'll get some bias

what is your total budget? honestly, those cameras are so comprable it's not worth debating all that much (read the dpreview stuff, it'll help) - more importantly you need to think about what canon and nikon offer as a whole product line because once you start buying one it gets very expensive to switch later on (lenses, lighting, accessories)

Well, since I amon the Nikon side of things, there is ALOT of things to take into consideration. What do you want to shoot? What are the conditions going to be?? How much do you want to spend?? Is this a for fun thing, or could you get serious about it?? Like Carl stated, both are good. Both have good and bad things about them. I would personally go see what camera fits in your hands the best and use that for a starting point. Case in point. The Nikon d40 or d40x. Both can be had cheap, and sometimes REAL cheap. I know of some good places to pick up used Nikon gear, and I am guessing the Carl has the same connections on the cannon side. If this is something that you might want to get a bit more serious about, I would look for a good deal on a better body. The d40/40x is a great camera, don't get me wrong. The biggest factor (again, depending on what you want to do), is the lens selection. With the d40, you need a afs lens. The body does not have a focus motor built into it. If you pick up a used d70 body ($400ish), now you don't have that worry, so you open your self up to some very good lens's.

my total budget is looking right around 800 bucks. what im concerned about is how compatible or should i say how easy it is to buy lenses and crap for it. i really dont want a camera where im going to be somewhat limited farther down the line when i start picking up stuff for it.

refurbished 30D w/ kit lens for $650 on adorama would be a great option for you

or like russ said - d70 + lens.

And high tight on that budget are you?? Meaning I can get you into 100 different nikon setups for that, but the biggest factor is what kind of shooting do you want to do. I can score d70's for $400 all day, so there is half of your budget. Now, what lens. If you are looking at some far away things, you can jump into a 70-300 fairly cheap (around 300), and ther goes most if not all your budget, and if you want to do any up close stuff, now you will be over. The nikon 18-200 lens goes for around $600 on its own. I can watch a couple of the nikon sites I am on and let you know about any good deals that pop up.

also keep in mind what performance features are important for you. the d70 is only 3fps (the d80 is also 3fps) - the 30D is 5fps. the d70 also only has a 5 area ttl for af (d80 has 11 area ttl and 30D has a 9 point ttl af). the nikons will have a much better flash system but not as good high ISO performance as a 30D or 40D (the rebel line of canons has poor high iso performance as well imo).

I highly recommend you read through dpreview and see what you think on your own. either way you go you'll be pleased

One cannot go wrong with either nikon or canon, or a few others for that matter. Both have good and bad(if even) points.

    Personally I went with the xti over the D40 for the following reasons;
-lens availability(d40 requires afs lenses for camera control)
    -more focus points
-10mp vs 6mp (d40x wasn't out yet) While not the deal breaker I liked the option of being able to blow up/crop shots, the down side is files are harder to manage and some say more mp=more noise
-I didn't exactly like nikons interface. I think the higher end models are probably better but didn't care for the d40.

In the end these are things I could have learned to live and probably would have been just as happy with either camera. Bottom line, go check out the cameras, take a few shots in the store and see which one YOU like better.

On an $800 budget I would consider an xxD canon over an xxxD. the rebel line's ergonomics are not suited to me - the body is too small. the original drebel, the 300D was acceptable in size but the 350D and newer are just too small (small size to be expected in entry level dslr's though - wider appeal but definately hold both a rebel and a 30/40D in your hands before you buy, it will be a factor). I also prefer the 2 wheel layout on the xxD line - it makes shooting changing lighting in M much more practical.

like I originally said, adorama has a great deal on refurbished 30D's - I just bought a second one from them. you'll get 5fps over an xti's 3fps, and significantly better high ISO performance.
