Is anyone on here an electrician? I am thinking of changing carrers from electronics tech to an electrician. If there is any info or part time work you might have that would be great. Thanks in advance. Bill
I just started my first quarter at dunwoody. I like it so far. Their job placements are good too. They also send out a lot of emails about internships and being an apprentice and stuff like that. hope that kind of helps
^lets hope you are right about job placement. Ive had a few friends go to brown, dunwoody, rasmusun and they said there job placement is all temp agency work.
I go to Minneapolis tech for HVAC. The first year of HVAC here is the same as the first year for an electrician. From what I heard from a lot of electricians is that it is not very steady. It can go up and down for hours and change a lot! That’s why I ended up going into HVAC. It still changes just not as much. Can you be more specific on what you want to know?
I went to school to be a electrician, but when i graduated it was hard to find any jobs, most places were looking for Journeyman electricians, you can allways do the apprenticeship thru the union, but that was a joke also. Most of the people I went to school with went into the apprenticeship but not alot of them finished due to the crappy jobs and alot of traveling. and you only work when the union hall needs you, if their slow you dont work.
Well, the info you just gave me is huge. I guess the main reason for the post was to see if anyone had a part time job so I could get into it a little and see if it is for me. I know I can meet all the physical requierments of it. Do you like the HVAC? Still happy with that choice?
I'm a production electrician. Probably not what you're looking for, but I love it. The work can be tough, and crappy hours, but it is tons of fun. Might be worth looking into. Nothing like getting paid to play with $20,000 moving lights, and see shows
I am really happy with my choice. Its good pay and should be good hours. You work by your self or with a partner when needed and you dont have a boss to look over your shoulder. It will always be hard to find part time work because electricians are a dime a dozen. From what i heard companies are all about hiring journney men but once they become a master the companies ditch them for another journey men because of the cheaper pay. So electricians will just keep failing the test so they stay at the journey man level. And when the companies get slow, you're gone. The main reason i am taking this two year program is to get into the pipefitters union. Thats just the way i am going...but there are a ton of different feilds within HVAC that you could go through.
