Does anyone know where I could find a cheap engine hoist? I only need it for the SVX so I don't want to spend an arm and a leg.

Chinese engine hoists are pretty cheap at Northern Tool. They work, but sometimes they can be a pain to get together.

You could always rent one if nobody on here has one. I'm not sure how much it is at certain places, but if its cheaper for the 2 times you need it than to buy it, you can spend the money on an engine stand.

yep, IIRC mine cost about $100, and came with a leveler. pulled a few subaru engines, even was plenty strong to pull my toyota 22RE with tranny, transfer case and front driveshaft as an assembly.

I have pulled my V8 & TH350 as one piece with my cheap one from Northern Tool. About $150 - $175 with a leveler I think?

Hrm, I'm only going to be using it twice total. Does anyone know where I can rent one, or does anyone have one that I could get into the back of a Forester and borrow twice? (Once to pull, once to put back).

Also, does anyone know where I could rent an engine stand for a week or so? Or would it be cheaper to just buy one.

To put it into perspective for you. I spent 150 on my 2ton engine hoist and stand at Northern. I figured the cost of renting a hoist was 50 bucks for a couple days. So, to remove and replace a motor would cost me 100 bucks for rental, and it was 30/day to rent the engine stand. So, if I only used the stand for one day (I used it for about 5 months) it would cost me 130 bucks to pull, stand and replace my motor. And like you, I said "Well, I'm only doing this once, I don't need a hoist forever..." Wrong. I have pulled 4 motors out of cars with this now, and others have used it for their motor projects. The engine stand has held 4 motors at this point. I've gotten alot of use out of the hoist for pulling other things around too. I used it twice to yank the body off of 2 different Datsun roadsters and I regularly use it to hoist the SR20DET around the garage easily. If Northern has a set for 150, go for it. You wont regret your purchase.
