Hey guys, could anyone recommend a place to have my motor swapped out for another standard unit in my 01 outback? It's unfortunately not in running condition when I bought it and would need to have this done before either summer class starts, or unless my Impreza takes a crap before that.
Where are you sourcing the replacement motor from??? Two local shops would be RS Motors and NF performance... They are more performance based
I will be sourcing the motor from Oak Leaf pretty soon I would hope. Thanks for the advice, will check in with them.

The previous owner was driving from a stoplight when the crank pulley decided it wanted to experience freedom from hard labor. It now makes some ungodly noise. lol Thanks will take you folks into consideration as well.
I bought a 99 outback this spring that had had the crank bolt/pulley fall off. If the crank sprocket (the pulley that drives the timing belt) didn't slip, the engine is most likely fine. There's a groove in the end of the crank that helps line that stuff up, but it doesn't actually hold any force, once it's lined up, the bolt tension is what holds things together. Most shops will tell you you need a new crank if that's damaged, but you don't. I put a new timing belt and pulleys in, a new crank sprocket (the old one was fine, until it broke in an attempt to get it off), new woodruff key, and new crank pulley, and it's been running great ever since.
Hey guys. I just went to check on the Lego just now and I didn't notice any missing pulleys like the PO mentioned. I also check the oil on the dipstick a few times but didn't notice any pieces. I wanted to drain the pan, but didn't have the tools at the moment. The only thing missing was a belt for the A/C. But there was also this kind of sheered/cut out looking hole below the crank sprocket, could that mean anything or was that just a bolt to hold on the cover? Also, here's a video I found of how it sounded like when I had to drive it up a trailer. I just remember that loud knocking from the beginning at start-up, but not that loud squeaking from the belts. Could there be a possibility my motor is not blown to bits like the wrx in the video?
Wow, that video makes it around. I have the piston from that motor on my desk, it's missing part of it's skirt.
lol. Watch me screwdriver-stethescope a motor. BTW....that squeaking in the video was not the belts. Anyway, at first glance, the crank pulley didn't appear to be missing on my car either, it was hanging from the belt, but it was not attached to the motor. But, it also didn't make any weird noises with it off, we ran it a bit with the pulley completely removed, and it ran very well (no alternator....low voltage....so not perfect). That hole in the timing cover was not stock. I don't know why, but it looks like someone cut out an opening to access/inspect that idler pulley.
Haha. Well, anyways. I just got a picture from the previous owner of what it was that popped off. :unamused: Since that came off and I started the car a few times to go up a trailer, does that mean the motor is done for sure? Wishful thinking for just bent valves?
bent valves means the main timing belt broke and the pistons hit the valves. being that the car was able to drive up a trailer, I dont think it's bent valves. so the sprocket somehow popped out the hole, but the car still runs!?! I would say, quit starting the car.
I only had to start it when i had to load it onto a trailer from the PO's home. Thanks for the info, I appreciate the input from you guys.
WTF....I've never seen an idler pulley come apart like that. Yea, you might have gotten lucky, the tensioner may have been able to soak that up enough to keep the belt from jumping while it was running. Pull the covers off and have a look at things, if the crank/cam sprockets are still lined up as they should be, you could be golden. New belt, new pulleys, new water pump is always a good idea when doing that.
