Got a 04 Forester XT w/ 106,xxx. 4EAT and stock. I get a ticking sound from the engine from 1800 to 3000 rpms. Its more prominent around 2000 rpms. But this is what makes me confused. It doesnt do it when the engine is cold, or warming up. Just at operating temp. This afternoon i went to wal-mart to get some oil to change, and when i left, the temp gauge says it was at normal, but no ticking. I took a couple minutes of driving for it to start ticking. When i changed the oil this evening, i dumped it into a clear containter to check for metal particles. And the oil was a clean and clearz as can be. Now i didnt check the filter, cause the oil looked so clear. It does sound like its coming from the passanger side of the engine.

    Anyone got any suggestions?
    Thanks!!

PS: its really only during lite acceleration

It might be your boost control soleniod. The GM one in my old wagon was crazy loud around that rpm range in the winter.

Subaru engines are noisy, every subaru I've owned has made ticking/tapping sounds that on most other cars would scare the crap outta me.

This sounds like my car, which I think is normal.

This, on the other hand, is bad.

my car has made a "ticking" sound that has made me crazy for some time now, and it does seem to show most at the RPM'S that you are talking about. I have come to a conclusion that it is a valve noise, more specifically bucket slop. my premise is that when the engine is coldest the oil is less viscous, and the buckets rattle less. At normal operating temperatures the oil doesn't restrict the buckets and the ~2k rpm range is enough to cause more of a snap on valve closure, and higher RPM's make noises that mask the sound of the buckets.

Also it seems like the noise has changed since I updated my clearances (there were 2 intake valves that had too much)

    Any thoughts?

Yep, my car has noticeably more valvetrain noise now after the clearances were adjusted too. I just went through the drive-through at Dairy Queen and I could clearly hear the tick echoing off the building.

WOW, that is almost exactly where I notice the sound more than anywhere else!

Does the noise they normally make happen to be a little more noticeable/louder when it's this cold out first starting it??

Mines the oposite. But i can really hear it when im next to a building. Makes me feel a little uneasy with that kinda of echo. Makes me feel like when other people around, theyre thinking that my FXT might blow up!

Also, would getting your valves adjusted help with that? I know im due for a valve clearence check up.

Ok, I was getting a little worried when i started it up tonight with the radio off and blower motor on off, and it made a bit of noise... especially after watching a rod come out my co-workers oil pan on his beater truck this afternoon...

Especially when it's his second truck to blow a motor this week... first one was a freshly rebuilt early 90's toyota 4cyl 4x4 (his normal winter beater)... the same guy is also fixing an E36 bmw he has that got hit very hard in the front a cpl months ago... and slowly building up a e30 bmw (blew a headgasket a cpl fall ago, now is a total project car)...

Can't get any worse luck than that i dont think....

I actually notice it in general when it is cold out, but it seems more apparent to me after warmup. I notice a whole different set of noises at cold start (pretty sure there is some piston slap in there). I have owned vehicles with noisey engines, jeep 4 liters seem to make horrible piston slap noises when cold. None of the other vehicles made noises like these subarus make. I have come to the conclusion that the best thing I can do is ignore the noise and mantain the car properly, if it dies it dies.

To the OP's original post, I think that I always notice noises more right after ANY service, I can't imagine hwo paranoid I would be after letting anyone else touch my car, especially someone from an oil change shop! I also think that the oil used will make a difference in the sound produced

My 04' ticks a lot, its worse in colder weather, but ticks all the time. Warming the engine up doesn't seem to make a difference.

My 07' is tick free currently, which makes me wonder if my 04 engine is getting worn. =(
