Anyone have any ideas for a great exhaust for my car? I drive an 06' Legacy GT Spec B. I want the added power of the bigger piping without the noise of an oversized exhaust(I have a honda civic with an overly big muffler if I need to make noise). I want something that looks subtle and clean and has a meaty growl but not a ridiculous nonstop hum. Most people suggest the Cobb but that is louder than I want and from searching YOUTUBE I kind of like the HKS Silent Hipower and the Magnaflo but want some experienced peoples' input. If it matters, I also need it to be a full turbo back so I can move to stage 2 on my AP and was wondering if I am better off buying a catback seperate from the downpipe.

Cobb (who sells an exhaust) claims the difference between a stg 2 LGT with an exhaust and without is ~5hp.

I've heard good things about the SPT exhaust. Really, I think an exhaust on an LGT is a waste without some big mods and kind of defeats the purpose. This is supposed to be stealthy, exhausts are the opposite.

Oh and get a catted downpipe if only to reduce the noise. Remember you also have to replace the uppipe, OEM STI bolts on, has a flex, and is cheap used. Awesome. There's also the same pipe cross listed for some older legacy that is cheaper if you buy it new, the PN# is on LGT.com

From reading on Cobb's websites and their map descriptions it says you need a new turboback exhaust to run the stage 2 maps. Am I misreading this?

And it says it boosts the HP up to 300 so 50 over stock and quite a bit over the stage 1.

There's been a long discussion on LGT.com about this.
Cobb themselves said you didn't need it

So what do I need to do before I can load the Stage 2 map? Sorry for all the questions. You can just tell me to go to LGT.com if you like.

I was told the Uppipe was unneeded for this and that the Downpipe is the only truly restrictive part. But I really appreciate all of your help nm+. I mean, I can get a new uppipe and downpipe for a few hundred where as a turboback exhaust is like 1200-1800.

That's idiotic. I don't have any experience with the stock exhaust on the LGT, but anyone who tells you the same on the WRX or STI is lying. All of the stock WRX and STI mufflers are quite a restriction.

Maybe the difference is only 5 WHP with a base-map stage 2, but with any type of custom tuning, that WHP difference will multiply a few times. Also, keep in mind that you may be losing that WHP through the cars whole powerband. That's a big difference in area under the curve.

Is the SPT a complete exhaust with the downpipe or just a catback or what?

The LGT exhaust is not very restrictive past the cat.
And yes, this factors in under the curve.
The main reason to replace the exhaust after the cat on a stock turbo LGT is sound and look.

Taras (another member) has the magnaflow on his spec b and he says he doesn't like it. You could PM him with further questions about that system.
I would think that the HKS is a lot louder than the cobb, but I could be wrong. Plus you said you don't want anything too big or stands out to much. This HKS mufflers are pretty big. Maybe even gaudy looking.
Cobb or SPT for best sound and looks.

    **EDIT-
On second thought, you could just do the aftermarket dp and have someone mock up a stealthback mid for you. This would just be 3 inch custom piping from the dp, tapering to 2.5 at the stock axle back. That way you could still have mild sound with stock look from the rear. This would most likely be your cheapest bet.

Ok. Do you know if anyone has done any flow testing to prove this?

No, but I've seen dynos (as in same day, everything else the same)
I'm not claiming it can't be better, but I'm saying for a stock turbo LGT, you won't see much of a difference at all. Certainly not enough to justofy the price.
If you're going BT, then yes, do something with the CBE.

Get an UP/DP and a custom tune...far better deal/"investment" than changing anything cat-back based on your stated goals. Also, waffles.

Was the car custom tuned between the two dyno sessions? I'm assuming they did one run with the stock exhaust, slapped on an aftermarket exhaust and did another run?

As I mentioned above, to really get a benefit from exhaust mods, you really need to tune for them. You will gain significant power from aftermarket exhaust because you are able to increase timing and add boost. Just adding exhaust to a previous tune or a basemap staged tune will only show limited gains (like the 5 WHP you're citing).

    Just saying. :)

EDIT: But yeah, I know cat/axlebacks aren't as popular for the LGT crowd, as they're almost all ridiculously expensive.

That may be true, but I still hold that for nearly $1000 (which is what a non-tin foil exhaust seems to run), you can do a whole lot better with your money.
