Went and test drove my new baby today, a 2006 WRX limited. Picking it up Friday, and I am stoked! It's all stock besides a Cobb intake, but that won't last long. Any body care to share things to watch for/check for with the car? I've been driving Subarus for a long time, but this will be my first car with a turbo, so any input would be appreciated.

99,000 miles, not sure about it bein tuned for the intake, it was on the car when the guy I'm buying it from got it. And my 98 Impreza will be for sale as soon as I get my new car. You interested in it?

That intake could be trouble. If its not tuned for it, I personally wouldn't touch the thing.

I wondered about that, but I figured its just an intake. Not like its has exhaust to go with it. What kind of problems could it cause?

    At minimum, compression test.

Otherwise, the usual. Tires, water pump/tbelt done, signs of mods/abuse.

Yeah I planned on doing the timing belt right away. I checked the wheel bearings, ball joints, tie rod ends, everything is good there. One CV boot is leaking by the clamp a little, has some scratches, nothing unexpected for a car with that mileage. Shows signs of a light front end collision, has one new head light, and found a little over spray in a couple spots. Nothing to crazy.

Yea I would get it tuned if your not sure if it hasnt been yet, but that's me. Or at least if you're going to add an exhaust and than some, I would get it tuned after that right away obviously. Good luck with the new ride!

Thanks. Compression check is in progress right now. Does anyone know if there is a place near St.cloud that I can have a tune done? Or am I better off just buying one of those Cobb Access ports?

You're better off driving the 1 hour to the cites and getting an NF Tune. Don't waste your money on an access port tune when you have better options.

Its more than an hour. But how much does a tune usually cost?

contact your tuner as it often depends on mods. much less (hundreds less) than an accessport.

    $600 for a new AccessPort

Like sheen said, reach out to a tuner and ask them what it may cost. It will totally be worth your time.

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to having a car that has a grip of options as to what I can mod on it again. Been awhile since I had something with so many bolt on options.

Just work with your tuner on those mods. They may require tunes, or your tuner may have ideas to save you money down the road (vs buying that part again, but larger).

Well, compression check passed with flying colors, had some new plugs put in since they had the old ones out, and a new clamp put on a leaky CV boot. Tomorrow by this time I will be the proud new owner of my first turbo powered Subaru!

I'm sure I will be! This will make it 3 Subaru's that I own. Haha. Adding it to my 1987 GL wagon, and my 1998 Impreza.

Thought about selling it last summer, but never found a replacement for it. But now that I have one, so here's the thread I started. Car is up to 213,xxx miles now. And is due for a timing belt. And the power steering rack has a leak, and ripped boots. Let the bidding begin! ;)

Just got home with the new whip. Holy awesome! I really don't know how I have went this long without a WRX. Haha. So fun to drive! The car is great, and I got what I think is a great deal on it. Its the red 2006 limited that was for sale on here.

You'll get used to it too quickly, then the mod-bug hits...

    Not that that's a bad thing :)

Haha, yeah I'm sure it won't take long. I figure the first thing will be exhaust and a tune. I got a feeling once my son is born, the mods will be on hold for a bit tho.

Enjoy the stock power for as long as you can! I left mine bone stock for 4 years and loved it. Then stage 2, then ungraded the fuel pump and injectors for a more aggressive stage 2 tune. Ran that until the motor went...that's when the craziness began! lol All of this was over a 10 year period. Modding can become an expensive hobby/addiction. But if you're coming from an NA Impreza, the stock stuff should feel pretty awesome for a while! I recommend making it your own with a set of rims to your liking, leave the power mods alone.;)Also...make sure to have the exhaust valves relashed as recommended by Subaru to increase your motors longevity! I'm pretty sure that i could have easily passed 200k miles on my 2.0L if i would have followed the relashing advice.

Congrats on the ride, the red with tan interior looks really nice!

Thanks for the advice. I ordered up a set of black weathertech floor liners already so I can keep the interior in nice shape. I already have some MB 5 star pattern, gun metal grey 17" rims that were on my 98. So I'm gonna see how they look on the new ride. But don't plan on running them until next spring. And as soon as I get laid off for the winter, I am planning on going thru the car and doin all the regular recommended maintenance that is due. Can't wait to learn more about it.

And I am stoked on the red/tan my self. Before I looked at it I wasn't sure I was gonna like it. But it was love at first sight. Lol. My friends and family all really like the car, which is funny because a lot of them claim to hate Subies! Haha

I haven't heard of the valve relashing thing yet. When is this recommended to be done? I was planning on doing the timing belt soon. I would assume they should be done at the same time?

I believe it is about every 60k? Not 100% sure tho. And i feel like it was more of an issue with the 02/03's, but still needs to be done on the 2.5's. Someone correct me if i'm wrong please!

105k miles for shimmed buckets (02, most 03). Not on the maintenance schedule for 06, so not sure... all I know is you have to pull the cams for heads with shimless buckets. Kind of a pita either way even to just inspect them.

Awesome. Thanks for the info guys. I'm getting laid off this week, so I will have some time to crawl around this unit a bit, and see how much I can do. Any one have any info on a good repair manual for the 06 wrx? I can't seem to find a Chilton or a Haynes manual for that year.

Yeah I just found some. $340 a set. Another question, any suggestions on getting a new key fob? The car only came with one, and I found some online, but not so sure I'm looking at the right ones, or how I go about programing them to my car.
