I've got proof on my hands that northerns are nasty.

Pulled a 9-10 lber into the canoe in the Boundary Waters a few years ago. It went after my dad once we let it out of the net. He mashed it with the paddle hard enought to nock it out.

I was extricating the lure from its mouth and it lunged and clamped down (apparently NOT completely nocked out). I had to shove its eyes in with my other hand to get it to release. I've got one REALLY nice scar in particular that it left on my right hand.

that's why fishermen should wear those knife gloves from the food service industry when handling those vicious suckers - a few of my friends keep at least one in their box

I fish mainly pike and some walleye. I keep a jaw spreader, hemostat, and decent pliers in my tackle box for that reason. Pike can clamp down on your hand even if you already clubbed them.

landing large pike or muskies in a cradle instead of a net can really help. cradle + jaw spreaders is ftw. if it's a really big fish and I just want to get it back in the water quickly I'll use a bolt cutter to cut the hooks
